T20 World Cup 2022: Liton Das scored 60 runs off 27 balls against India, but his knock went in vain as Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangladesh lost by 5 runs at the Adelaide Oval

By Sabyasachi Chowdhury: Right-handed batter Liton Das has become Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in a calendar year after his team’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 match against Rohit Sharma’s India on Wednesday, November 2 at the Adelaide Oval.

In 2022, Liton has scored 1693 runs from 36 matches at an average of 42.32 with three centuries and 12 half-centuries to show for his efforts. He broke the record of Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 1657 runs from 43 matches in 2018 with two centuries and nine half-centuries to his name.

In fact, no Bangladeshi batter has scored more half-centuries than the Dinajpur-born Liton in a calendar year. Das has a massive task at hand when the Tigers face Babar Azam’s Pakistan in their last Super 12 match on Sunday, November 6 at Adelaide Oval.

As far as the match against India was concerned, Das scored 60 runs off 27 balls after Bangladesh were initially asked to chase down 185 to win the match. The youngster hit Arshdeep Singh for three fours in the first over and took Bangladesh off to a flying start.

Due to his onslaught, the Tigers were 17 runs ahead of the DLS par score when rain halted play after seven overs during Bangladesh’s run-chase. But after play resumed, Das failed to carry on.

KL Rahul threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s end and caught Liton short of his crease. Liton pulled off a full-stretch dive, but he failed to get his bat in on time.

After the rain delay, the Tigers were set a revised target of 151 off 17 overs, but they ended up losing the match by seven runs.
