Virat Kohli has etched himself into T20 World Cup history as he became the highest run-getter in the tournament. Kohli needed 16 runs to go past Mahela Jayawardene’s tally of 1016 runs.

By India Today Web Desk: Virat Kohli has rewritten the history books yet again as the Indian star went past Mahela Jayawardene’s tally to become the highest run-getter in T20 World Cup history on Wednesday.

Kohli entered the 1000 runs club in the tournament with his 12 against South Africa on Sunday. India lost the game to the Proteas after pushing them all the way.

The Indian star entered Adelaide needing just 16 runs to go past Jayawardene. The Sri Lankan legend had 1016 runs to his name in the T20 World Cups that he took part in.

Jayawardene played a total of 31 matches to amass the tally of runs and had an average of 39.07 and a strike rate of 134.74. His highest score was 100.

Kohli took part in his first T20 World Cup way back in 2012 and has since played 25 matches in the tournament. During this time, the star batter has scored 12 fifties in the T20 World Cup and has remained not out 11 times. His highest score of 89 not out came against the West Indies in the 2016 edition of the tournament.

The others on the highest run-getters list are yet to cross the 1000-run barrier, with Chris Gayle in the third spot with 965 runs and India captain Rohit Sharma with 921 runs.

This World Cup has so far seen Kohli deliver two magnificent knocks in India’s wins, with the first one coming against Pakistan where he got the team home. The other was a fifty against The Netherlands, which helped India set up a winning total.
