How Do You Get a Bus Licence?

For either licence, you must pass the HVCBA - heavy vehicle competency-based assessment. You can apply for an MR licence after having held a class C driver's licence for at least one year (including your time on P1). You can begin practising with a supervisor in an MR vehicle if you have at least a P2 car licence; you can even get your MR licence before you get your full class bud licence.

Before you can get your medium rigid licence, you must first pass the MR knowledge test, an eyesight test, and the HVCBA.

You must have held a class C licence (at least P1) for at least two years before applying for a class HR. As soon as you have a P2 licence, you can practise with a supervisor.

Like the MR, you must pass a knowledge and vision test, as well as the HVCBA or a heavy vehicle driving test. The test is identical in an HR and not significantly more expensive in an MR. Obtaining an HR licence will increase your employment opportunities, so pursue it if possible.

Fill out this form if you want to apply for the licence.

Once you have your MR or HR licence, you must meet additional requirements in order to transport passengers. You must obtain authorisation from the appropriate department (for example, Service NSW in New South Wales).

To be eligible, you must be at least 20 years old (21 in some areas), have held an unrestricted driver licence for at least 12 months in the previous two years, be medically fit to drive a public passenger vehicle, and have successfully completed Bus Driver Authority training.

You must submit a police check that is no more than three months old, a medical assessment that is no more than six months old, a certified copy of your licence, two recent passport photos, proof of training, and any required payment with your application.
