Instagram’s broadcast channels coming to Facebook, Messenger

Social media giant Meta launched the Broadcast channel feature for Instagram in February. This Telegram-like feature introduced a one-way messaging feature to the photo-sharing app. This feature offered creators a way to update their followers without having to post on their main page. Now, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company is expanding the availability of the Broadcast Channels feature. Moreover, the company has also confirmed that this feature will also be available for Facebook and Messenger users as well.

This feature will enable creators and public figures (who have their own Facebook pages) to send messages — including photos, videos and voice notes — to their community.

Facebook, Messenger broadcast channels: Availability
The company said that any page admin where the feature is now accessible can start a channel if they want. However, the feature isn’t available for all users yet. So, those who can’t find the option to open a broadcast channel can join the waitlist for now.

How broadcast channels will work on Facebook and Messenger
Since broadcast channels are still a one-way messaging tool, only Page administrators will be able to send messages in the channel. However, participants will be allowed to react to them and vote in polls.

Meta will allow admins on Facebook to launch a channel directly from their page. The social media platform will then send followers a one-time notification to join after admins send their first message.

As per the screenshots shared by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, broadcast channels will show up in users’ Messenger chats under a tab labelled “Channels.” Every time the page owner sends an update, participants will get notifications. However, Meta will also allow users to mute the channel anytime they want.

Just like the Instagram version of the feature, users who chose not to participate the first time might still be able to access the channel from the page’s profile.
