MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with M3 chips may not launch before 2024

The new batch of MacBooks, including the Macbook Pro and MacBook Pro, will launch in 2024, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. These new MacBooks will come with the next generation of Apple Silicon, the M3 series.

The M3-powered MacBook is expected to be launched in early 2024, followed by the M3 MacBook Air a few months later. Gurman had earlier predicted that the MacBook Air, powered by the new Chip, might be launched in October. However, he now believes that it will be released sometime between next spring and summer, “at the earliest.”

According to the latest Power On newsletter by Gurman, the 13-inch and 15-inch M3 MacBook Airs are currently in the engineering verification test (EVT) stage. Meanwhile, M3 MacBook Pros have progressed further and are “nearing mass production.”

Gurman also reports that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, equipped with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, have entered the DVT stage (design validation test) and are on track to release between early and spring 2024. Last January, Apple released its 2023 MacBook Pros, which were powered by M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.

Apple is testing the M3 series of chips for Macs, with the M3 Pro chip having a 12-core configuration, 6 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores. The chip has 18 GPU cores and 36GB of memory. Meanwhile, the M3 Max is expected to have more than 14 CPU cores and over 40 GPU cores. The M3 chip series is said to be built on the 3-nanometer fabrication process, which should deliver a higher core density and improved performance. The first line of Macs with M3 chips is expected to come out later this year or early next year.

According to Gurman’s report, rumours from the previous weekend suggesting Apple’s launch of new iPads this week are false. The reports have claimed that the iPad Air and iPad mini would receive chip upgrades, with the former using the M2 chip and the latter using the A16 Bionic. However, Gurman suggests that while these upgrades are coming to iPads, it is not imminent.
