OnePlus Open Foldable Has Apparently Been Delayed For A Display Upgrade

OnePlus confirmed earlier this year that it would launch its first foldable smartphone in Q3 2023, but it seems that date will be slipping. According to a new report, the OnePlus Open will suffer a delay, but at least for a good reason.

Less than a week after the company confirmed the name of its first foldable in a cheeky teaser, the OnePlus Open appears to be getting hit with a delay. The news comes courtesy of Max Jambor, a reliable source for this sort of information. Jambor says that the Open's launch has been delayed "a bit," with no clear timeline on when it will actually be revealed. OnePlus Open was expected to see its debut in late August. Why the delay? Jambor claims that OnePlus made a late switch to a key component, the display. The Open was originally set to use a display panel from BOE, a Chinese display maker who has provided displays for devices such as the 2019 Motorola Razr and Huawei's more recent Mate X3. OnePlus apparently ran into some issues with the BOE panels and is moving to panels provided by Samsung. In theory, this should be an upgrade. Samsung panels are used pretty widely in foldables right now, with the company providing displays for the Google Pixel Fold, Motorola Razr+, and of course the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 which are on pre-order now. Will it be worth the wait? That's harder to know, but past leaks certainly have the OnePlus Open looking like a compelling foldable. We've reached out to OnePlus for an official statement on the alleged delay, but the company wasn't immediately available for comment. We'll follow up when/if we hear back. The OnePlus Open Launch Date May Have Been Pushed Back (for Good Reason)

TL;DR

  • The OnePlus Open launch date has apparently been delayed.
  • The launch has apparently been postponed due to a switch from BOE to Samsung screens.
  • OnePlus confirmed back at MWC 2023 that it's working on a foldable phone, and we've seen leaks and apparent renders since then. Two sources recently claimed that the so-called OnePlus Open will launch on August 26, but it sounds like this date just got postponed.

Frequent tipster Max Jambor has claimed on Twitter that the OnePlus Open launch date has been "pushed back a bit."

Jambor asserts that the foldable has been delayed due to a switch from BOE screens to Samsung displays. The leaker suggested that display quality concerns were the main reason for the switch. Presumably, this switch was decided a few weeks ago at the very least rather than in the past few days, as this is a major change that could take a while.

Nevertheless, there's no word on a new launch date for the OnePlus Open, but a week's delay would mean that the launch coincides with IFA 2023.

The new foldable is tipped to arrive with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a 7.8-inch folding display, a 6.3-inch smartphone screen, and a 4,800mAh battery with 67W wired charging. It's also said to arrive with a triple rear camera system, consisting of a 48MP main camera, 48MP ultrawide lens, and a 64MP periscope lens. So those looking for an alternative to the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 5 should keep this in mind.

OnePlus Confirms Name Of Its Foldable Smartphone

OnePlus has just confirmed the name of its first foldable smartphone. The phone will be called the 'OnePlus Open', as recent rumors suggested. This name was first revealed by Max Jambor, a well-known tipster.

OnePlus has just confirmed the name of its very first foldable smartphone

For a long time, everyone thought that OnePlus will go for the OnePlus Fold name. The company opted to go against that, as Samsung is using the 'Fold' naming, as do some other smartphone OEMs.

In a tweet shared by its official Twitter aka X account, OnePlus said the following: "We OPEN when others FOLD". That is a very clear confirmation of the phone's name.

Now, many of you are probably wondering when will OnePlus finally announce that smartphone. Well, the company did confirm that the device is coming in Q3 this year. So, that much we do know for a fact.

The device will likely launch on August 29

What OnePlus did not confirm is the exact launch date. Well, if Max Jambor is to be believed, the device will arrive on August 29. He's usually spot on when it comes to OnePlus stuff, so we don't have a reason not to believe him. He did also guess the phone's name, so… there you go.

The OnePlus Open will launch globally, it won't be region-specific, or anything of the sort. Now, the latest piece of information from Ice Universe, another tipster, says that the OnePlus Open will look like the OPPO Find N3.

The OPPO Find N3 could arrive sooner than expected

The OPPO Find N3 did not launch yet either, but it's expected to arrive sooner than we originally thought it'll come. The Find N2 launched in December last year, but its successor could arrive much sooner.

The OnePlus Open did appear in CAD-based renders a while back, but some rumors suggest it'll have a different form factor, closer to the Find N2. It remains to be seen.
