Stony Brook University's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences has announced a new graduate program in data Science (DAS), which will offer both MS and PhD degree programs in data science beginning in Fall 2023.

The graduate program is jointly offered by the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS), and the Department of Computer Science (CS), both part of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). Students will receive vigorous training in data science encompassing core topics such as statistical analysis, machine learning, big data analysis/management and computer programming.

"Our new Data Science graduate program builds on the strength of our nationally ranked Departments of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics and Statistics while channeling the support of the tri-state and New York metropolitan business communities," said Jon Longtin, interim dean, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. "As a flagship institution of the State University of New York, Stony Brook offers one of the most affordable tuitions in the country, creating opportunities for more students to benefit from our outstanding programs, including in important emerging new areas like Data Science."

This versatile program integrates computer science and statistical science and machine learning along with a diversified range of electives in quantitative finance, operations research and bioinformatics. Designed to prepare the next generation of data scientists in big data systems analysis and machine learning, the program is ideal for students with degrees in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, and economics, finance or social science with a strong mathematics, statistics and programming background.

"In today's data-driven world, the demand for skilled professionals in the field of data science has grown exponentially, creating the need for graduates who can provide the needed technical and analytical expertise," said Samir Das, chair of the Department of Computer Science, also home to Stony Brook's Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation. "In our curriculum, students will be able to build multidisciplinary expertise in the cross-section of statistical analysis, big data analytics, and computing making them very valuable in the job market."

"The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics will provide comprehensive career-oriented quantitative training to our new data science graduate students in the areas of statistics, quantitative finance, operations research, computational applied math, and computational biology," said Joe Mitchell, chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, which is ranked among the top 10 applied mathematics programs in the country.

"Data Science is the engine of biomedical informatics and critical to many aspects of modern medicine including biomarker discovery, clinical decision support, drug development, and personalized medicine," said Joel Saltz, MD, Cherith professor and founding chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics. "Our department will provide exciting research and training opportunities to our data science graduate students and prepare them to make a profound impact on health science fields"
