Her Outfit Was Better Suited To A 60-year-old

by MARIANNE POWER, Daily Mail

Style gurus Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine are famous for their candid remarks about people's dress sense. Each week in Femail magazine, they are just as honest as they make over a reader. This week it is the turn of 21-year-old student Emilie Woollie from Kent.

THE SUBJECT:

Emilie is in her final year studying law at Brunel University in London, before taking her law practice course. She lives with her boyfriend and a friend in a two-bedroom flat in Pimlico, central London. She has two sisters and two brothers, and is originally from Kent.

THE PROBLEM:

I suffer from frequent blushing all over my body. As a result, I wear only long sleeves, high necks and trousers. I always wear black and if I ever wear skirts they have to be below the knees with boots so that no skin is showing. I'm fed up of covering up - I feel old and unfeminine.

SUSANNAH SAYS:

Emilie arrived head to toe in black, which is elegant for a chic 60-year-old but not for a young woman of 21. Like many people who suffer from acne, rosacea or any skin condition, the route she has taken is to cover everything. When I suffered from acne, I used to be convinced that all anyone was looking at was my skin. If you focus on your other assets, so will everyone else.

On the other hand, this is a real problem for Emilie and she can take steps to address it. She should avoid red tones and stick to sea greens and blues, which neutralise any redness. Light, summery colours will also make her seem younger. Her hair is boring and her forehead is too big to wear it in a middle parting.

These fitted jeans and the cross-over top show off her perfect figure. The soft, fluted sleeves of the chiffon top make her look more feminine, as does the softened hair.

The chunky and striking necklace is perfect. The red pointy boots with silver stiletto heels are also a great way to get attention - they give her attitude and make her individual. Emilie is tall enough to wear different coloured shoes peeping out of her jeans, but if you are smaller you must stick to same-colour shoes and trousers to elongate the leg. She looks so happy and comfortable in these clothes.

TRINNY SAYS:

Emilie looks like a stage hand who runs on and off the set removing props in the intervals - she is making herself invisible.

I can't believe she's 21: at the moment she looks about 30.

Too much forehead is showing and her hair is really flat. Polo necks with a large chest are not a good combination - they make your chest look bigger. Wearing black also deadens her complexion.

She has a fab body which is perfectly in proportion. But she comes across as being unconfident and the heavy black eyeliner is too much.

She needs to be more trendy and instead of blending into the background we want to make her leader of the pack. She has an amazing mouth which we need to enhance for full-on sexy lips.

Emilie has found the ideal pair of jeans for her. They fit her bum perfectly and are a snug size 10 rather than the 12 she normally wears. The strong pattern and cool colours in the chiffon top draw attention away from any problem skin and make a statement.

Her legs go on for ever in those jeans and give the top a sharper edge. Heavy patterns and floaty tops can look a bit mumsy when put with a skirt. The denim is a good contrast.

EMILIE SAYS:

I love the jeans. Normally I wear baggy, low-slung ones and I've never worn tight-fitting trousers, but they feel good.

I wouldn't pick the top, though, because it's low-cut and heavily patterned.

The few times I don't wear black, I wear pink, which is one of my worst colours apparently because it highlights any redness. I had also never tried orange tones, but they look good.

The necklace is great. It covers my chest and draws attention away from my skin. I think I will be more daring in future. I love my hair and until today I had never worn lipstick. I hate my lips and was amazed when Susannah and Trinny said they loved them.
