The 13 Best Fall Jackets For Men To Crush The Most Stylish Season

With all due respect to the rest of the calendar, fall might just be the most stylish season of the year thanks to the true heroes of autumn — fall jackets. It starts getting cold enough to begin layering, but it's not such a deep freeze that survival becomes the only prerogative when getting dressed in the morning. But the best fall jackets hit the sweet spot between "Maybe it's still summer" and "Did we turn the clocks back yet?"

There aren't many hard-and-fast rules on what makes a jacket one for fall specifically, but at the least, it should be able to see you through the often unpredictable highs and lows of the transitional season. That means your autumnal outerwear shouldn't be too heavy. Many of our favorite fall jackets are minimally padded or completely unlined, allowing them to be worn over a tee on a warm fall day or over a hoodie on a brisk morning.

Because versatility is the name of the game, many of these jackets can see you through winter, spring, and even cold summer nights. In short, the best fall jackets are just the best jackets, period.

When it comes to aesthetics, though, there's no reason not to lean into the seasonal vibes when picking a jacket. Embrace the back-to-school feeling with a professorial plaid blazer or take a page from nature's paintbrush with an earthy brown or rust-orange waxed canvas jacket. It's fall, y'all. Let's have some fun. From chore coats to denim truckers, these are the jackets we want to wear all season.

The denim trucker jacket may be the perfect fall jacket for men. This style makes for an ideal lightweight layer for dressing up or down, and when it comes to denim, it's not a bad idea to head straight to the source. Levi's invented both men's jeans and the jean jacket, so they know denim. There are many washes to choose from, so it won't hurt to pick up a couple to have in the rotation, like a medium blue and a black, for example. Aside from Levi's, Ralph Lauren and Lee make great versions of the trucker jacket.

Among Huckberry's many stylish wares, the Flint and Tinder flannel-lined waxed trucker jacket is consistently among the brand's best sellers. It's not hard to see why. The made-in-America jacket is as stylish as it is practical, with a blanket lining and a waxed cotton canvas shell that's water-resistant and breaks in beautifully. If it's good enough for Pedro Pascal's character, Joel, to survive a zombie apocalypse in The Last of Us, it can more than get you through a rainy morning commute.

Everlane's bomber jacket nods to the traditional MA-1 flight jacket with details like an insulating flap under the zipper and a pocket on the sleeve, but the design is streamlined enough to keep the jacket from looking like a Top Gun costume. It's available in five neutral colors and is cut from a blend of cotton and recycled polyester. Considered details include a two-way zipper and convenient magnetic flap pockets. The jacket is part of Everlane's Uniform Collection, a curation of the brand's essential items that come with a one-year replacement guarantee.

This might just be the ideal travel jacket for fall. There are plenty of secure pockets to stash boarding passes, earbud cases, and snacks, and the waxed cotton fabric keeps you prepared for inclement weather. Plus, the rugged yet refined look of the jacket will see you through wherever your trip takes you. Founded in 1894, Barbour played a key role in developing waxed canvas jackets, and the brand's styles have been worn by everyone from Steve McQueen to Princess Diana.

Carhartt's zip-up Detroit jacket is a workwear staple. The simple zip-front and cropped blouson fit make it easy to style with men's jeans, chinos, and work pants. It's warmer than most jackets on this list because of the blanket lining, but that extends the usefulness of the jacket into colder weather. The Detroit jacket has a secure zip pocket on the chest, two inner pockets, and two outer hand pockets, making it perfect for carrying your everyday essentials, regardless of the color of your collar.

The Harrington jacket is one of the most popular styles to reproduce, but sometimes there's a value in going with the original. Baracuta's G9 Harrington was worn by leading men like Steve McQueen, but you don't need to be the king of cool to pull it off. The simple silhouette makes it an easy jacket for anyone to wear, and it's available in a range of colors. The jacket is made from a water-resistant cotton/polyester blend with a plaid lining. True to tradition, it's manufactured in the UK.

Todd Snyder's luxe take on the trucker jacket is a dressy alternative to denim. The Dylan jacket is made in Italy from buttery soft calf suede, and it's available in a range of rich earth tones, perfectly on trend for fall. The jacket features snap buttons, adding a subtle Western flair. The only downside to wearing this fall jacket is the time it might take to choose a favorite color.

The M65 liner was technically not designed as a jacket, but, as the name suggests, an internal layer meant to be buttoned into a field jacket. Despite that, the liner has been adopted as an outer layer by the street style set thanks to its unique silhouette, which sets it apart from the average bomber jacket. This jacket is padded enough to keep warm on a cool day and can be layered under a coat or over a sweater for more warmth. The jacket pairs well with streetwear-adjacent pieces like hoodies and sneakers or mixed with other military and workwear pieces.

An anorak is half jacket, half hoodie, and a fully stylish alternative to the typical zip-up jacket. LL Bean's half zip features a color block design that looks like something from an outdoor catalog from the '90s, in the best possible way. It's made from water and wind-resistant nylon, and the front zip pocket doubles as a packable pouch for stowing the jacket.

Leather brand Schott NYC has been making the Perfecto leather jacket in the US for decades and has been sported by icons as varied as Marlon Brando and The Ramones. The iconic moto jacket was developed specifically for Harley Davidson but was quickly adopted by the counter-culture. A Schott Perfecto will imbue your wardrobe with a healthy dose of swagger, whether or not you have a motorcycle license. Add a classic pair of shades to complete the look.

If Alex Mill feels like an elevated version of Gap or J.Crew, that's not by accident. The brand was co-founded by Alex Drexler, Somsack Sikhounmuong, and Drexler's father, Mickey — the mall brand guru famous for revitalizing both Gap and J.Crew in the '90s and 2000s. Cut from corduroy and available in navy and dark green, this jacket practically screams fall. The work jacket styling makes it easy to dress up or down, and the patch pockets are roomy and convenient. The jacket's buttons are made from corozo, a natural material that's a durable and eco-friendly alternative to plastic.

Calling all budding literature professors. While a stack of books from the English canon might be the most important accessory, a tweed blazer might be number two. J.Crew's heritage-focused Wallace & Barnes label gets the details right; it's cut from Scottish Harris tweed wool and has a roomy, classic fit with casual patch pockets and functional cuff buttons. Lean into the Indiana Jones vibe with a pair of wide-fit khakis or keep it modern with a pair of dark dress pants.

The Pendleton Pedro Stadium Trucker ranch jacket is a rugged, western-inspired layer that's worth adding to the rotation. The ranch jacket is a cool cousin of both the work jacket and the trucker jacket and looks great with Western staples like blue jeans and suede boots. Pendleton, a Portland-based company known for wool blankets, makes this stylish duck cotton jacket that's as hard-wearing as it is stylish. The jacket features a wool and polyester blend blanket lining for extra warmth, and its resemblance to something Bob Dylan might have worn on one of his album covers adds to the cool factor.
