Detroit Native, Fashion Designer Tracy Reese Opens New Midtown Studio

Nationally renowned fashion designer Tracy Reese has made a move that shows she has her feet firmly planted in her hometown.

The Detroit native and fashion industry veteran of more than two decades on Friday opened a new location for her Hope for Flowers by Tracy Reese studio. The 3,200-square-foot space is at 119 Garfield St. In a retail space at The Freelon at Sugar Hill development in Midtown. The location includes a design and photo studio, showroom for wholesale buyers, a dedicated classroom for art enrichment classes and community workshops, and an in-house factory that will host sewer apprenticeships.

The effort previously operated out of the Franklin Wright Settlements Youthville location near Detroit's Milwaukee Junction neighborhood.

Reese established the Hope for Flowers label in 2018. The label produces responsibly designed apparel collections for women featuring dresses, sportswear and shoes.

Reese established her first clothing line in 1998 in New York and moved her design studio to Detroit in 2018.

Reese in a Monday email to Crain's said the Freelon space is a good fit as it sits right in the heart of Detroit's cultural center. The Freelon is a mixed-use project from Detroit-based Develop Detroit LLC and the Preservation of Affordable Housing Inc.

She signed a 10-year lease for the space, but declined to elaborate on the terms.

The opening of the new location ends a search for a long-term space.

"Almost 2-and-a-half years ago, we embarked upon a quest to find a permanent home for Hope for Flowers in Detroit," Reese said in a Monday news release. "It's been a long and eventful journey with many blessings. I am relieved, elated, proud, and grateful to finally move into our new space."

Reese declined to disclose the financial investment put into the move and projected annual revenue.

The 2020 Crain's Notable Women in Design honoree earlier this year earned $55,000 for the project through the Motor City Match program.

Hope for Flowers is a great fit for the space, Julie DeGraaf Velazquez, vice president of redevelopment for Preservation of Affordable Housing, said in a statement.

"(Reese's) commitment to strengthening her hometown of Detroit, creating high-quality job opportunities and sustainable production methods, and providing direct access to arts education for the community made Hope for Flowers a great fit for The Freelon," said Velazquez, who led the completion of The Freelon, Sugar Hill.

Detroit-based Urban Alterscape designed and built out the space, integrating materials such as cork, reclaimed wood and products from recycled materials including felt acoustic fixtures throughout the studio to reflect Hope for Flowers' commitment to sustainability. The studio also features LED light fixtures, high-efficiency heating and cooling, and water-saving devices.

Reese on Monday told Crain's the new location has a staff of eight full-time and two part-time employees, along with 8-10 contracted teaching artists. The enrichment classes will be offered for up to 18 students and focus on sustainability, Reese said, while the workshops will have space for up to 30 patrons. Youth classes take place each Saturday, with adult classes slated for Thursday nights.

The courses are important, Reese said, as she believes art enrichment and sustainability are lacking in most Detroit public schools. Reese, whose designs have been worn by former First Lady Michelle Obama, actress Sarah Jessica Parker and talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey, attributes her creativity and success as a designer to art classes she was able to take growing up in Detroit.

"As I learned about fashion's footprint in the world — the pollution it can cause, the overproduction and abuse of labor by some brands — it became critically important for me to make sure that I was working as responsibly as possible," Reese said the release.

Reese's philosophy makes Hope for Flowers a standout business in the fashion industry, Motor City Match Director Andrew Lucco said.

"In a world where the fashion industry has often come under scrutiny for its environmental footprint, Hope for Flowers stands out as a beacon of hope and change," Lucco said in Monday's release. "Their commitment to sustainable materials, ethical production practices, and local engagement will undoubtedly set new standards for the fashion world."
