Cons:
"For rainy days, picking a trench coat made of waterproof fabric is essential," says Los Angeles-based personal style expert, Basia Richard. The most common waterproof fabrics tend to be polyester, polyurethane or a blend of cotton and polyurethane fabrics. "Most trenches are made of a water-repellent cotton, sometimes with some variations on blends," says Richard. The lining typically determines how heavy or light your trench feels when you're wearing it. Unlined styles won't weigh you down but they also won't keep you warm in chilly weather, so you'll want to consider the season and "when you are going to wear it," says Richard.
LengthNo matter your height, a trench "should hit just below your knees, more or less," says Ilaria Urbinati, a fashion stylist and founder of Leo Edit. Still, there are no hard rules on the matter and personal style preferences are important, as well as what works best for your body type. "Keep your proportions in mind," says Urbinati. "For a person who is petite—5 feet 3 inches and under—for example, knee length or a shorter length might be the most flattering." Also consider the fit: Most trenches, even those that run on the longer side and hit below the knee, look great on a variety of body types so long as the coat is well-tailored with a streamlined fit, says Richard.
SizeA trench coat is an essential wardrobe staple and investment piece designed to stand the test of time, which is why getting the right size is key. "The fit is everything," says Richard. "You want to make sure that coat fits you like a glove." Pay attention to the sleeve length, shoulder fit, the overall silhouette, she says. If you're in between sizes, go for the larger option. "It's usually best to size up in trench coats, especially if they're lightly lined, so you have the option of wearing a heavier sweater underneath on a cooler day or a light knit underneath on those warm but rainy fall or spring days," finds Urbinati. "The thing about a trench coat is it looks good even if it's a little loose over a tee. That's part of the vibe."
PriceA few factors impact the price of a trench coat; namely, fabric choice and finishes. Cashmere and wool are among the more expensive fabrics for coats, which will drive up the price of your trench. Lighter polyester fabrics tend to be more affordable, and coats that are unlined are always not as pricy as those lined in viscose or silk. "Also pay attention to stitching and finishes," says Richard. A high-quality coat will have a smooth feel and sturdy seams. On average, you can expect to pay around $500 for a good trench coat that will last. Although, you might choose to spend more or less. "The classic Burberry, which has been a staple of that brand for ages, will run around $2,500," says Urbinati. "But J.Crew always makes a good trench for around $350."
How Do I Choose The Best Trench Coat?Trench coats come in different fabrics, colors, lengths and styles, and have the ability to make any outfit look effortlessly chic. Some key considerations to keep in mind when looking for the perfect trench coat are length, material and body fit. "Before choosing the right trench coat, keep in mind the practicality of that piece," says Richard. "For cold winters, picking a long trench coat that hits the knees is the best for keeping you warm and the fabric choice is very important. I suggest either a 100% wool or wool blend." For milder fall or spring weather, Richard likes a classic double-breasted cotton trench coat. "This type of coat will last a very long time. It's got a classic shape, and I would suggest choosing a classic color, such as black, brown or beige."
