"The thing about a trench coat is it looks good even if it's a little loose over a tee. That's part of the vibe."

Cashmere and wool are among the more expensive fabrics for coats, which will drive up the price of your trench. Lighter polyester fabrics tend to be more affordable, and coats that are unlined are always not as pricy as those lined in viscose or silk. "Also pay attention to stitching and finishes," says Richard. A high-quality coat will have a smooth feel and sturdy seams. On average, you can expect to pay around $500 for a good trench coat that will last. Although, you might choose to spend more or less. "The classic Burberry, which has been a staple of that brand for ages, will run around $2,500," says Urbinati. "But J.Crew always makes a good trench for around $350."
