A Look Back At Lady Gaga's 16-minute Entrance At The 2019 Met Gala

© @ladygaga Lady Gaga stole the show as she revealed a number of outfits at the 2019 Met Gala.

Lady Gaga is known for her avant-garde fashion looks, including her infamous "meat dress" and for putting on a show. So why wouldn't she put on a show at one of the biggest fashion events in the world?

At the 2019 Met Gala, the 'Born This Way' singer did just that, when she put on a 16-minute show to the delight of attendees and viewers, revealing outfit after outfit in honor of the theme: 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'.

Who designed Lady Gaga's 2019 Met Gala outfits?

Project Runway judge, fashion designer, and Lady Gaga's fashion director, Brandon Maxwell was responsible for Lady Gaga's neon pink camp-inspired outfit changes, which consisted of four different looks revealed in the span of 16 minutes.

What were the four looks?

The first look was seen as Lady Gaga arrived on the red carpet, and consisted of a neon pink cape gown with a 25-foot train, accessorized with a matching pink oversized bow, cartoonishly large gold fake eyelashes, and her hair in a short blonde bob with bangs.

Throughout her transformation, she was accompanied by men in suits holding umbrellas as part of her show, holding her train, as she posed dramatically with wide eyes to accentuate her eye makeup.

At four minutes, the singer began descending the stairs to the gala, removing her bow, showcasing the braided details in her hair, as Maxwell helped to unbutton the cape, revealing a black asymmetrically tufted dress with a sweetheart neckline.

She was then given an umbrella, which she enthusiastically posed with.

Descending the Met Gala steps once more, Maxwell unzipped her black dress, revealing another neon pink satin maxidress.

During her performance, she was given a pair of studded cat-eye sunglasses, and a giant retro cell phone, which ended up being a purse, with Gaga reapplying her lipstick as her team mimed touching up her makeup and hair.

For her final look, Maxwell unzipped the pink dress, revealing that under all her dresses, she was wearing a sparkling black bra, panties, six-inch-high platform glitter boots, and fishnet tights all along.

She also dragged along with her a pink wheelbarrow bearing the name 'Haus of Gaga', Gaga's name for her creative team. The wheelbarrow held bottles of rosé and pink cowboy hats.

Lady Gaga's thoughts on the transformation

"I know intrinsically that I have a camp soul," Lady Gaga told Vogue, referencing the essay that inspired the 2019 Met Gala theme, Susan Sontag's 'Notes on "Camp"', published in 1964.

"What I really love about what we're doing is that it, it reads like an essay or a poem and it tells a story," Gaga said of her outfits.

"It's so in line with Susan Sontag's notes. I feel that it's intelligent and I feel it's also very innocent in a lot of ways."

It has yet to be confirmed if Lady Gaga will be making an appearance at the 2023 Met Gala.

Met Gala 2022 Live Updates: Highlights From The Red Carpet

The Met Gala is often called "fashion's biggest night," and this year, it paid homage to one of the industry's greatest designers, Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. Titled, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," the exhibition features around 150 original looks from his storied career, alongside many of their respective original sketches. Lagerfeld often said that he could draw before he could talk, and his illustrations held the secrets to his creative vision. You can learn more about the 2023 Met Gala here.

But we know what you're really here for—the red carpet looks! Last night proved to be one of the most glamorous in recent years, thanks to a dress code that simply stated "in honor of Karl." Celebrities like Penelope Cruz, Dua Lipa, and Kristen Stewart went through the vast Chanel archives to select their looks, while others like Cardi B and Teyana Taylor, sought inspiration from Lagerfeld's own iconic style. Read through for all of our live updates from the red carpet, as they happened.

Saoirse Ronan Reveals Her Love For Lady Gaga

Saoirse Ronan sat down with Document magazine recently and her friend, the former Vogue creative director Grace Coddington, did the interview. The two met a dozen years ago when Saoirse was 16 and doing her first shoot for Vogue, and they've stayed in contact since.

They traded some interesting stories, including one about Lady Gaga, who Saoirse says she adores.  They say it's never a good idea to meet your idols, but that wasn't so in this case.

"That was a dream come true for me because when I was younger, she was my idol. She was the person I admired most as a teenager. Genuinely. I remember always thinking, when I meet Lady Gaga — because I will meet her — I don't want it to be at an industry thing. Because you never get to really properly spend time with anyone," she recalled.

"And they're looking over your shoulder to see if there's anyone more famous behind you. I just wanted to bump into her on the streets of somewhere.  And that is exactly what happened."

Saoirse didn't get into when or where it happened, but Gaga was on brand and "had no trousers on," she says.  "I couldn't believe it. And she was so nice to my mom."

Speaking of Paul Mescal – isn't everyone? – Saoirse says the Oscar nominee, who she shot a film with last year, is one of the good guys.   "We did a film together at the beginning of last year in Australia, called Foe. We knew each other sort of in passing before, just through friends. We've become very, very close since making the film. We're genuine friends; we're not Hollywood friends," she revealed.

Saoirse also reminisced about her stint hosting Saturday Night Live in 2017. Even though she got some flak for an Aer Lingus skit which some sourpusses branded stereotypical, Saoirse said the work that goes into the 90-minute show is "a real killer," but worth it.

"Someone said something that really stuck with me, which is if you're not a fan of the show, you shouldn't do the show. It takes so much energy out of you for the week, because – you're right – it's relentless. Not even just that Saturday night, when you do the show twice. I needed two B-12 shots throughout the week because I was so exhausted. People are usually doing it during a press junket, as well.  I absolutely loved it. I've always loved comedy," she says.

No word on when Foe will be released. It's expected this year, via Amazon Studios.
