Outrage Over Video Showing 'Irresponsible' Tourists Taking SUV For A Spin Around Lakes In Ladakh - Indiatimes.com

A video of cruel and environmentally hazardous tourist behaviour in Ladakh has gone viral online, with many criticising tourists for driving a car through Ramsar areas — Tso Kar and Tso Moriri Lakes. Watch the viral video here.

Tourist drives SUV recklessly near reserved lakes in Ladakh

A video posted on Twitter by Mofussil_Medic (@Daak_Saab) shows an SUV speeding across what looks to be a lake's marsh.

While sharing this clip, @Daak_Saab wrote, "Shared by a fellow birder from #Ladakh… this stupidity is getting out of hand. This seemingly "barren" landscape is teeming with #life- and the short summer is when that life is at its peak. That too at a Ramsar Site! These idiots need to be named, shamed and booked!"

A video like this has not gone viral for the first time. A video showing visitors driving a car into Pangong Pso Lake in Ladakh aroused uproar in April 2022. A tiny table with booze bottles and food was also set up on the lake's bank, according to the video.

People on the internet were angry. A man suggested this is what happens when tourism is excessively promoted in eco-sensitive zones. This is bound to happen, he feels.

A man had a simple solution and wrote that private vehicles shouldn't be allowed in Ladakh which is an eco-sensitive zone.

Here's how some other people reacted.

Ladakh's Tso Kar and Tso Moriri lakes are a part of Ramsar locations

Ramsar locations include Ladakh's Tso Kar and Tso Moriri lakes. This means that the region around the lake should be preserved with as little human intervention as possible.

The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty established in 1971 with the goal of conserving and promoting the sustainable use of wetlands.

Ramsar sites are recognised for their ecological significance, biodiversity, and the services they provide, such as water purification, flood control, and habitat for numerous plant and animal species. These designated sites are intended to be conserved and managed to ensure their ecological integrity.

There are currently over 2,400 Ramsar sites around the world, covering a total area of over 253 million hectares. These sites can include diverse wetland types, such as marshes, lakes, rivers, peatlands, mangroves, and coastal areas.
