Jimoh Aliu, better known by his stage name Aworo, was born on November 11, 1939 in Okemesi, which is located in the Ekiti West local government area of the state of Ekiti. He has worked in the entertainment industry for many years as a performer, make-up artist, director, producer, and location designer.

It is well knowledge that he only spent a total of six months enrolled in the primary school and that he was born under mysterious conditions. Aliu Fakoya, his father, was a Muslim and an Ifa priest from Oke-Imesi, while his mother was from Iloro-Ekiti.

Both of his parents were from Nigeria. Aliu Fakoya took his son Jimoh along with him on his travels as an itinerant Ifa Priest and Diviner. Some of the towns they visited include Ijebu-ode, Ifo, Ota, Odogbolu, Sagamu, Ada, Aagba, Iresi, Otan-Aiyegbaju, and Lagos. Jimoh went to the old St. Peter Catholic Primary School in Okemesi. While there, he learned the art of divination from his father, who also instructed him in the usage of medicinal herbs. When Jimoh was in Lagos, he learnt the trade of bricklaying, tailoring and driving.

Aliu joined the Ogungbe Theatre in 1959 and was a member of the company until 1966. Through his work with Ogungbe Theatre, he visited the majority of towns in what is now the states of Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti. 1966 was the year that he parted ways with Ogungbe Theatre and established Jimoh Aliu Concert Party. This organization had its headquarters in Ikare Akoko, which is located in Ondo State.

Jimoh is a highly respected practitioner of classical Theatre Arts who has a passionate interest in the life of the community and its cultural heritage. Chief Jimoh Aliu, who is also a commentator on Nigerian culture abroad, helps to build a bridge between the traditional and modern aspects of Nigerian culture.

He has worked as an actor, singer, dancer, and makeup artist, as well as a producer and director, scriptwriter, and location and costume designer. It was in 1959 when Akin Ogungbe, a Nigerian seasoned dramatist, paid a visit to his hometown that he started his career as an actor. He rose to prominence as a result of the success of his television shows, including “Arelu” and “Yanpon Yanrin,” which included well-known characters such as Fadeyi Oloro, Orisabunmi, and Aworo.

In 1967, he enlisted in the armed forces of Nigeria. It was a stroke of good fortune that his higher officers recognized his talent as a dramatist almost immediately. During the time of the civil war, he was tasked with traveling throughout the freed territories and talking with soldiers stationed in conflict zones.

During his time with the Nigerian Army on the front lines of the conflict, he communicated with his fellow soldiers using a type of English known as pidgin. He gave performances in locations such as Uyo, Eket, Enugu, Onisha, Aba, Port-Harcourt, and Benin, in addition to several regions in the northern portion of Nigeria.

He was responsible for producing four series of plays for the Yoruba photo play magazine known as ATOKA. He also produced several radio dramas, including: Ma boreje, Afopina, Odu-Ifa,/gba-Oro, Orunmila, Orisa Adimula, Igbo Olodumare, Iku jare eda, Agba-arin, Laalu, and Kutupuu.

His career reached a turning point with the production of the television play Igbo Olodumare, which was based on a novel written by D.O. Fagunwa and commissioned by Yemi Farounbi in his capacity as General Manager of NTV Akure. The program was such a big hit in Ondo State, that it continues to represent, to this day, the most inventive program that any Television Station in Ondo State has ever produced.

Igbo Olodumare was broadcast in all of the states where Yoruba is spoken, having been broadcast on NTA Ilorin, NTA Abeokuta, NTA Akure, and BCOS-TV in Ibadan. His other television drama series, titled Igba Oro, was created by Yemi Fareunbi Labs Deroy Centre Limited. It was broadcast on OSRC-TV Ibadan, NTA Abeokuta, NTA Ikeja, OSRC TV Akure, and NTA Ilorin. Jimoh Aliu is a versatile actor who has appeared in a number of Ogunde’s films in a variety of roles, including that of actor, make-up artist, and costume designer, among others.
