Since its inception, LIV Golf has staged events worldwide, desiring to become the premier international golf circuit for the best players in the world.

But LIV golfers will not be eligible for the 2024 Presidents Cup, which will pit the United States against the best International players not from Europe.

That means no Cameron Smith of Australia or Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa.

Americans Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, and Bryson DeChambeau are also ineligible.

All players who wish to compete in the 2024 Presidents Cup must be eligible to compete in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, per Tuesday’s announcement of the qualification process.

That could all change in the coming months, as the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF)—the beneficiary for LIV Golf—are negotiating how professional golf will look in the future.

Should these three bodies come to an agreement, then perhaps LIV golfers will become eligible for PGA Tour events, meaning they gain access to the Presidents Cup.

For now, that is not the case.

Any player on the Saudi-backed circuit remains suspended by the PGA Tour.

Alas, here is the full qualification process for the 2024 Presidents Cup, which will be held at Royal Montreal Golf Club from Sept. 24-29, 2024.

United States – 2024 Presidents Cup Qualification Process:

Like the 2023 Ryder Cup, the U.S. team will have six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s picks selected by skipper Jim Furyk, the 2003 U.S. Open champion.

Also, like the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup will have rankings, which are now live.

The top 12 in the U.S. standings, along with the point totals, follows below:

2. Max Homa (1,832)

3. Wyndham Clark (1,805)

4. Collin Morikawa (1,760)

5. Patrick Cantlay (1,567)

6. Eric Cole (1,481)

7. Xander Schauffele (1,471)

Points are accumulated and weighed as follows:

From the 2023 Sentry at Kapalua through the 2023 RSM Classic, one FedEx Cup point accumulated at these events equates to one Presidents Cup point.

Things change for 2024, as qualifying will end at the 2024 BMW Championship, the penultimate event during the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

One FedEx Cup point equals two Presidents Cup points for The Players and all four major championships in 2024. Then, for all other events in 2024, one FedEx Cup point correlates to 1.5 President Cup points.

International – 2024 Presidents Cup Qualification Process:

Like the U.S., the International team will have six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s picks. Canadian Mike Weir, who won the 2003 Masters, will captain the Internationals.

The rankings, which are now live, are listed below. Notably, the criteria for selecting the International team differs from the U.S. team; the number in parentheses is the average number of points accumulated rather than the total number:

Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points will determine the 2024 International team.

The automatic qualifiers will be the top six eligible International players in the OWGR standings after the conclusion of the 2024 BMW Championship.

Weir will then make six picks the following week at the 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

International players who wish to automatically qualify need to compete in 15 or more OWGR-rated events from Sept. 12, 2022, through the 2024 BMW Championship, in which the final round is scheduled for Aug. 26, 2024.

Hence the average number of points being used in the International rankings as opposed to the total number of points utilized in the American rankings.

The reason for this is that a player will not be penalized for missing time due to injury, illness, or personal reasons.

There is no minimum number of events for captain’s picks, however.

Yet, like the U.S. team, all players must be eligible to play in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, meaning no LIV players can suit up on either side—at least for now.
