Join us for Summer Vikes on Central tomorrow

Summer Vikes on Central, part of the Summer Nights on Central series, will take place September 7 on Central Avenue in Valley City.

This event brings the community and Vcsu together for a night of shopping, food vendors, live music, business booths, prizes, games and so much more. This 2nd annual event will feature music by 32 Below, many business booths and a handful of fun surprises! This event is open to Valley City and the surrounding area. Come to downtown Valley City for a fun September night.

Summer Vikes on Central t-shirts are available for free on a first come, first-served basis beginning at 4:40 p.m. at the VCSU Gazebo. We will assemble on the south side of the VCSU Footbridge at 5:30 p.m., then walk from campus to downtown, led by the VCSU marching band. A street dance by 32 Below will begin at 6 p.m. followed by fireworks at 9 p.m.

All-campus convocation set for Sept. 7

All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to attend the All-Campus Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 7. The event will take place on McFarland Front Lawn at 11 a.m.

Why trust science? public lecture to take place Oct. 4

Why Trust Science? presented by Dr. Naomi Oreskes, world-renowned Harvard professor, will take place Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Performance Hall. The lecture is open to the public and will cover topics like CO2 storage, climate storage, COVID vaccines, and more.

The event is sponsored by What in the World Is Going On?, Valley City State University and Dr. Gilbert Kuipers, retired VCSU faculty member.

‘Eso, Eso’ art exhibit on display through Oct. 6

Join us for the VCSU Art Gallery’s first exhibition of the 2023-24 school year, featuring “Eso, Eso” by visiting artist Wendy Eggerman. Wendy is a talented potter from St. Paul, Minn. whose work focuses on straightforward forms with layered, somewhat chaotic, surfaces. Her art is a reflection of her experiences navigating the world as a Mexican-Scandinavian woman.

The exhibition will run from Aug. 21 through Oct. 6. There will also be a virtual walk-through of the exhibition. Additionally, the artist talk will take place on Sept. 21 at 3:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Choir Room (Room 177). A reception will follow in the Center for the Arts Lobby until 5:30 pm.

VCSU Datebook Planners are on sale for $5 at the Student Center Information Desk.

VCSU Foundation/Booster Board ‘Trip raffle’ is back

The winner’s choice ‘Trip Raffle’ sponsored by the VCSU Foundation/Booster Board is back! Tickets are being sold for $20 with a chance to win a trip for 2. Only 1,000 tickets are being sold and proceeds go towards athletic scholarships.

The winner can choose between trips to Scottsdale, Los Cabos, Napa Valley or Nashville. Runner-up drawing for 9 – $100 cash prizes. The drawing will be held on September 30, 2023 at halftime of the VCSU Vikings vs. Dickinson State football game.

Viking sports update

Football
The VCSU Football team dropped a 31-14 game Friday night at South Dakota School of Mines – an NCAA Division II school. The Vikings are now 1-1 this season. VCSU is back in action Sept. 16 at Dakota State University.

Volleyball
Viking Volleyball continued its strong start with a 5-0 record during the past week. VCSU went 4-0 at a tournament in Omaha and then defeated Concordia-Moorhead 3-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Vikings now have an 8-2 overall record – the program’s best start since the 1996 season.

Golf
The VCSU golf team won a dual with Mayville State on Tuesday, battling blustery conditions at Maple River Golf Club. Sydney Carlson won individual medalist honors for the Viking women. Cross Country
VCSU Cross Country will open the 2023 season this weekend as they travel to the MSUM Twilight Meet on Friday night. The women race at 7:30 p.m. and the men follow at 8:10 p.m.
