Versace Teams With George, Amal Clooney’s Foundation for Justice

MILAN — Versace is linking with the Clooney Foundation for Justice, the charity organization cofounded and chaired by George and Amal Clooney, furthering its commitment to human rights.

The Italian luxury fashion house has inked a multiyear partnership with the organization to support The Albies, the awards bestowed by the foundation on the “defenders of justice.”

Named after Justice Albie Sachs in honor of his pivotal role in fighting against apartheid in South Africa, the awards are held annually. This month, together with the president of the Ford Foundation Darren Walker, the Clooneys will host the Albie Awards at the New York Public Library. They are expected to draw such celebrities as Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Alicia Keys and Meryl Streep, as well as Donatella Versace, among others.

“I am truly honored to be supporting my friends Amal and George Clooney with Versace’s donation to The Albies. I am incredibly inspired by the way that Amal and George work so tirelessly to make this world a better place and fight for those that champion justice globally,” Versace said.

Financial details were not provided.

Since it was launched the Clooney Foundation for Justice has come out in support of victims of abuses of power, fighting systemic injustice against vulnerable communities including journalists, women and girls, democracy-defenders, LGBTQ people and minorities, providing free legal support to victims and working to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.

Active in about 40 countries, the foundation is currently investigating war crimes in Ukraine; monitoring sham trials targeting women and journalists; representing Yazidi women who were raped and enslaved by ISIS, and supporting survivors of atrocities in Congo and Sudan, among other initiatives.

“We firmly believe that it takes a community of allies to succeed in waging justice to protect human rights. Versace’s commitment to equality, including its active support for LGBTQ+ rights, inspires us to keep fighting the good fight,” the Clooneys said in a statement.

Versace’s chief executive officer Emmanuel Gintzburger expressed his pride in supporting the foundation’s “vital work in honoring those who defend justice globally for those who need it most.”

The fashion label has long supported human rights and charity initiatives.

For instance, during Pride Month in June 2022, Versace’s parent Capri Holdings Ltd. launched The Versace Foundation. The company has pledged $10 million to further the foundation’s mission of fostering, promoting and supporting programs, projects and activities designed to generate awareness and support for the LGBTQ community. The foundation engages with philanthropic organizations and community groups to support the preservation of LGBTQ history and culture as well as to promote the advancement of equality, wellness and safety for the LGBTQ community.

Last June the Versace Foundation, together with Donatella Versace and her daughter Allegra Versace Beck, supported the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Rocket Fund, making a five-year commitment to this new fundraising campaign in support of LGBTQ communities.

The designer has long voiced her support for LGBTQ equality. For previous iterations of Pride Month, Versace launched dedicated capsule collections, with sales benefiting charities that are active in shaping a more inclusive, equal world. For instance, in 2020 the Versace x Pride collection benefited Pride Live in the U.S. and Arcigay in Europe.

A year before, the Pride Live organization also appointed the designer as Stonewall ambassador.
