Golf is a game of patience as there are various factors that come into play when taking a shot. Professional play is, of course, unlike country clubs where a number of tee shots can be taken together and everyone has their own world of fun and games. On the professional courses, every player’s ball needs to be followed closely and the pace of play is very important to keep the game interesting.

Sadly, the DP World Tour golfers experienced quite a setback in this regard as they took on the challenges of round 2 on Friday. One of the prolific players was so disappointed in the pace of play at the ISPS Handa World Invitational that he lashed out at his peers on social media.

The tri-sanctioned event at Galgorm Castle and Castle Rock in Northern Ireland already has a dark cloud hanging over it. Now, the dawdling pace of play by the DPWT golfers has annoyed Mike Lorenzo-Vera, mainly with the 5 hours and 40 minutes it took to complete round 2 at the Castle on Friday.

5hrs40 to play a round of golf by professionals. A f***’n joke,” he wrote on his Twitter (now X) account, criticizing his compatriots’ skills. To be fair, the 35mph wind accompanied by rain didn’t make it any easier on the golfers. The unsuitable weather conditions certainly amounted to more time being taken for each shot.

The French golfer barely made the cut on Friday to play the final two rounds at Galgorm Castle. His motivation seems to be fading with the lack of directives and actions taken by the organizers. He agreed with a fan’s comment on his post that blames professional golfers for the slow play saying, “Yes sir! And the ref not pushing them.”

In light of Lorenzo-Vera’s comment, the golf world is abuzz about slow play being ‘out of control.’

Not too long ago, at the Amundi Evian Championship, Carlota Ciganda had a terrible experience due to slow play that ultimately ended with her disqualification. The Spanish golfer shared her honest opinion about the rules around pace of play which may contradict the view that Mike Lorenzo-Vera has so actively espoused.

While it is true that fast play keeps the tournament interesting for golfers and fans alike, professionals do need some time to evaluate their shots, especially in bad weather. Lorenzo-Vera’s frustration on professional golfers is completely understandable but most players have a different perspective about the pace of play, especially at renowned tournaments played in terrible weather, much like the ISPS Handa World Invitational.
