Legendary basketball coach Larry Brown has been coaching at either the collegiate or professional level for over half a century. At 82 years of age, he has absolutely nothing left to prove. However, it seems like he is adding another coaching stop to his already-stacked resume.
Brown most recently coached at Memphis as an assistant under Penny Hardaway for the 2021-22 season. He then transitioned to an advisory role before stepping down due to health concerns.
It seems like whatever health concerns he once had are behind him. The Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported on Monday that “all signs” are pointing to Brown joining Mike Hopkins’ staff at Washington for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

It’s still unclear what kind of role Brown will have under Hopkins. Regardless, many were shocked to hear that Brown will likely jump back into the sport.
Even Bill Snyder is wondering why Larry Brown won’t stay retired https://t.co/sAizXR8RkT

Lots of stuff happened but I know this: before Larry Brown showed up Memphis’ offense was literally unwatchable for 3+ years.
After Brown we’ve been to 2 consecutive NCAA tournaments and beat Houston 3 times / won a conference title. https://t.co/xPXWBGKUsf

Cranky old coaches are comfort food for Mike Hopkins apparently https://t.co/irs5P7ozy5

So instead of getting rid of Hopkins, they keep him + he adds a coach who has famously detested young basketball players for decades?! Cmon kids are not coming to play for either of these guys. https://t.co/fmVntxj4z5

Looks like the Pistons championship winning head coach will be heading out West. https://t.co/wN9Ng7qWDP

It is perhaps even more shocking to see Brown land at a program like Washington at his age, which hasn’t exactly been the model of success in recent years. Mike Hopkins and the Huskies have only made the NCAA Tournament once in his six seasons with the program.
What makes this a fit for Larry Brown is likely the connection both he and Mike Hopkins have to former Syracuse Orange head coach Jim Boeheim. Brown notably coached alongside Boeheim for the United States Olympic team, and Hopkins was a long-time assistant under Boeheim at Syracuse from 1995-2017.
This move likely won’t make Washington a contender overnight, but Brown’s experience coaching at the highest level certainly could be very valuable under Hopkins.
