Lookaway: two from two in bumpers last term

Jonbon might not be the only exciting prospect on show at Warwick on Wednesday as Neil King seems ready to take the wraps off top bumper horse Lookaway, who was denied an outing at Uttoxeter on Saturday because of the ground.

Owned by Peter Beadles, Lookaway won a Newbury bumper before stepping up to land the Grade 2 edition at Aintree’s Grand National meeting at odds of 28-1, although those closest to the five-year-old were not surprised by that performance.

The son of Ask has summered well and was entered a few weeks ago to make his debut over hurdles, but quicker conditions put paid to that, as they did when he was declared, but subsequently withdrawn, at Uttoxeter on Saturday.

King, who trains in Wiltshire, now has his sights set on introducing his stable star at Warwick, where Arkle favourite Jonbon – a much-hyped inmate of Nicky Henderson’s – is due to make his chasing debut.

“It frightened me when they were watering at Uttoxeter and if we wanted to run on that sort of ground we could have done it in September,” said the trainer.

“I’m not going to do that – he’s too nice to risk. I might be leaning to Warwick, a lovely track where the ground will be safe. And, to be honest, it wouldn’t worry me if I was running him over two miles or two-miles-five.”

King, who partnered winners in point-to-points and describes himself as a “very poor” amateur rider, thinks the world of Lookaway.

He added: “He’s absolutely delighted me – I couldn’t be happier with him. He looks a million dollars and his schooling has been fabulous so we’re ready to go as soon as it’s safe to.

“I’ve said enough about him, but I can’t wait to run him. He’s done nothing but thrill me all autumn. I ride him out every day and we worked him on the grass the other morning and he felt very special.

“He just feels all class. He has so much speed about him and does everything in such an easy fashion. He’s a lovely, loose mover and I absolutely love him to bits.”
