Maryland Reports $3.2 Million in Sports Betting Taxes for September

  • Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported more than $3 million in sports betting tax revenue for September
  • More than $442.45 million was bet during the month
  • Online sports betting accounted for 95% of the monthly total handle

Maryland Sports Betting is certainly welcoming the NFL back with open arms.

Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported $442,450,666 in total sports betting handle for September, a 67% increase in handle from August’s $263.7 million sports betting total. Maryland’s 13 retail and 12 online sports betting operators combined to generate more than $3.2 million in sports betting revenue for the state during the opening month of college and NFL football.

The state also welcomed its 13th retail sportsbook as well, when Canton Gaming and its operator partner Parx Interactive opening a sportsbook at The Green Turtle in Townson on Friday, Sept. 29.

Online Sports Betting Dominates as Usual

Online sports betting accounted for more than 95% of the total September sports betting handle. The Old Line State reported $420,957,789 in online sports betting compared with $21,492,877 in retail sports betting handle.

State sports betting operators combined for a 10.3% hold for the month. Online sports betting led to $2,888,568 million in tax revenue compared to just $342,859 in retail sports betting tax revenue. Canton Gaming and its operator partner Parx Interactive reported nearly $2.2 million in total online sports betting handle during its debut month in the state and more than $63,000 in Taxable Win.

Since Maryland launched sports betting in December 2021 it has contributed more than $37.2 million in tax revenue.

  • Caesars Sportsbook: $18,826,191 handle. $480,783 taxable win.
  • Crab Sports: 324,556 handle. $1,311 taxable win.
  • DraftKings: $154,122,794 handle. $5,691,947 taxable win.
  • Parx Interactive: $2,198,999 handle. $63,473 taxable win.
  • Barstool Sportsbook: $10,158,374 handle. $499,762 taxable win.
  • FanDuel: $175,005,166 handle. $11,087,281 taxable win.
  • BetFred: $1,768,780 handle. $0 taxable win.
  • Fanatics Sportsbook: $11,977,375 handle. $0 taxable win.
  • PointsBet: $4,141,977 handle. $371,896 taxable win.
  • SuperBook: $513,613 handle. $21,127 taxable win.

13 Retail Sports Betting Locations in State

The Green Turtle in Townson became the 13th sportsbook location to open in Maryland in late September. The sportsbook location opened on Friday, Sept. 29 after the sportsbook completed controlled demonstrations on Sept. 25 and Sept. 27. Customers participated in live sports betting as Maryland Lottery and Gaming representatives ensure the sportsbook complied with all required procedures and that its systems functioned properly.
