Miri man fined RM2,500 for online gambling in public place

MIRI (Feb 6) The Magistrates’ Court here today fined a man RM2,500 in default one month’ imprisonment for online Gambling in a public place.

Thomas Libau, 44, from Taman Ceria, Bandar Baru Permyjaya pleaded guilty before Magistrate Nazira Adlin Ahmad Khairul Razi to a charge framed under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 (Act 289).

The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or up to six months in jail, or both, upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Thomas was found engaging in online gambling in a shop lot at Desa Indah, Bandar Baru Permyjaya here at around 2pm on Feb 12 last year.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case while Thomas was unrepresented by a legal counsel.
