Sportsbooks still not sold on the Knicks despite 7-game win streak

Commercial Content 21+

In the midst of their Longest Winning Streak in nearly two years, the Knicks are officially the NBA’s hottest team. They’re also one of the worst teams in the league – at least according to their betting odds.

New York‘s seven-game surge has done very little to sway the opinion of bookmakers, who are still pricing this group as a hopeless long shot in every available futures market. That doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon, even as the wins continue to pile up for the most popular team in the league’s biggest market.

Knicks 250/1 to win the NBA Finals (BetMGM)

At BetMGM, the Knicks (17-13) are still dealing at 250/1 to win the NBA championship – tied for the ninth-worst odds on the sports betting market. That puts them in line with the Jazz (17-16), who have lost 13 of their last 20 games, and behind the Bulls (11-18), who have lost seven of nine and wouldn’t even make the play-in tournament if the season ended today.

It’s a similar story in the divisional market, where New York is priced as a 110/1 afterthought to win the Atlantic Division at FanDuel. That’s tied with the Raptors (13-18), who own the league’s second-longest losing Streak at six games and is a far cry from the price for the favored Celtics (22-9), who are dealing as virtual locks at -1000 despite sitting just 4.5 games above the Knicks in the division.

Meanwhile, New York owns sole possession of the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and sits five games back of the Bucks (22-8), who boast the best record in the NBA. And while their recent hot streak has propelled them up the standings, the Knicks rank 10th in net rating (+1.8) across the entire season – equalling the mark set by the crosstown rival Nets, who remain among the betting favorites to win the NBA title (+1400).

It’s not like this team has built its winning streak on fluky performances, either. Five of New York’s seven wins have come by double digits, which includes wins of 20-plus points over the Bulls and Hawks – both of whom sit below the Knicks in the standings but above them on the title oddsboard. They’ve outscored teams by 14.5 points per 100 possessions during their undefeated run, which ranks second in the league since Dec. 4 and is more than double the season-long mark set by the league-leading Cavaliers (+6.5).

Knicks to win the Atlantic Division 110/1 (FanDuel)

After stringing together one of the better runs in franchise history, the Knicks have the talent to keep up this level of play – even if oddsmakers remain skeptical of their title upside.

Leading scorer Julius Randle (22.5 PPG) has averaged 26.7 points with three 30-point efforts during this seven-game run. Top free agent Jalen Brunson is one of just nine players averaging at least 20 points and six assists on the year. And fourth-year guard RJ Barrett has developed into the ideal third option, scoring at least 20 points in each of his last five games after a slow start to the season.

Those three will attempt to keep this win streak rolling on Tuesday against the defending champion Warriors in a game that the Knicks are clear favorites to win. That’ll be the first of four straight home games for New York, which has earned four of its last seven victories on the road.

Betting on the NBA?

If, somehow, this team manages to win all four of those upcoming contests, it would secure the franchise’s longest winning streak since rattling off 13 straight in 2012-13. That group eventually finished 54-28 and earned the No. 2 seed in the East before losing unceremoniously to the Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

That was also the last time New York won the Atlantic Division, which still feels like a lofty goal for this year’s squad. Nevertheless, no team is as hot as the Knicks are right now, so bet against them at your own peril.
