Dehradun: Dinesh Dhanai, the former tourism minister in the Harish Rawat government and founder of the Uttarakhand Jan Ekta Party, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. The general secretary of the state Congress and district president of Pachwadoon, along with several Congress workers from Uttarkashi district also joined the ruling camp.
Dhanai, a former MLA from Tehri, joined the ruling party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.Despite his long association with the Congress, he secured a seat in the assembly in 2012 as an independent candidate.
However, he returned to the Congress party after the 2014 elections. In 2019, he founded the Uttarakhand Jan Ekta Party, formalising it with an inaugural convention in 2020.
After merging his party into the BJP, Dhanai said, “Inspired by the initiatives of PM Modi and CM Dhami, the entire Jan Ekta Party has gathered here. Under the guidance of Modi, the nation is progressing, and Uttarakhand, led by Dhami, is advancing on the path of development.” He affirmed his commitment to transforming Tehri Garhwal into the premier district of the state under the BJP banner.
Congress leader and state general secretary PK Agarwal, along with Congress district president of Pachwadoon, Laxmi Agarwal, also switched allegiance to the BJP in the presence of state BJP president Mahendra Bhatt.
