I know they’re bummed about a 2^nd consecutive loss to Michigan, but make no mistake, this has been an elite team for about a decade or more.  What challenges await now?

Ohio State Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Ohio State will remain a top tier run team (5.55 projected), but all eyes will be on new QB McCord.  He’ll be fine, unless the OL (three to the NFL) takes too much of a step back.  Here’s what I like about their defense: The sack game looks great, the top three tacklers return, the secondary looks better, and solid coordinator Jim Knowles is in his 2^nd season. 

There could be a slight drop in DL performance which I will certainly chart.  In general, the stat sheet is a six-year model of incredible consistency.  They lose a really good PK, but this is Ohio State, so they went out and found their replacement in former USC PK Parker Lewis (74%).  As an aside, Ohio State’s recruits are almost all 4 or 5 star guys.  They dominated all other conference foes in signing top tier guys. 

Ohio State 2023 Predictions, Ohio State Schedule:

Here are the games that Ohio St “could” be challenged: At Notre Dame. 

It’s year two for their staff and they are likely to be stout defensively at their place. 

10/21 vs. Penn State.  They win often as a host, usually by creating their own luck, with blocked kicks, pick 6’s and fumble recoveries.  10/28 at Wisconsin.  It’s a meeting vs. former coach Luke Fickell, and his team has plenty of experience returning.  11/25 at Michigan. 

This is the final year just four teams make the playoffs.  Both Ohio State and Michigan made it last year but more likely, only one of these two will be considered now.

Ohio State Football Bottom Line:

11-1?  That’s 3-1 in the above games, but as a comparison, I think Michigan’s schedule is a bit more challenging/tricky.  Line play matters and I’ll be charting this closely, but I trust Jim Knowles, so in the end, Ohio St remains firmly in the playoff chase.

Ohio State Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I said a year ago that I would stay out of their way most of the year, looking only to back them occasionally as a rush pick. 

They were 1-0 in that role a year ago, but I was 0-0 until backing them in their “cover” vs. Georgia in the playoffs.  With more high spreads anticipated, and the “public” usually up-to-date on teams like this, I suspect I’ll have low volume here again this year.
