CBS Sports projects 12-team College Football Playoff field ahead of Week 7

With so much parity in College Football through the first half of the season, some have wondered what the 12-team College Football Playoff would look like. The CFP isn’t set to expand until next season, meaning the four-team format is still in place through this year.

CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has updated his projections for a 12-team model, and it features some major shakeups. One of the most notable changes is Notre Dame falling out of the top 12 after last week’s loss to Louisville.

Oklahoma also jumped into the field after defeating Texas in a Red River Rivalry game for the ages — although the Sooners might not be where fans think they’d be. With some exciting mock matchups, CBS Sports’ 12-team College Football Playoff would surely be exciting.

No. 1 Georgia | Bye

Georgia has been the favorite to win a third consecutive national title all year, and the Bulldogs put together perhaps their most complete performance last week. They were firing on all cylinders en route to a 51-13 victory over Kentucky.

Carson Beck looked strong as he put up career numbers, throwing for 389 yards and four touchdowns to lead the offense. Georgia is now gearing up to face Vanderbilt before next week’s bye ahead of the stretch run.

Through six games, Michigan has looked like the team to beat in the Big Ten. The Wolverines have been nothing short of dominant, including last week’s 52-10 trouncing at Minnesota.

J.J. McCarthy continues to put up solid numbers for the offense and enters Week 7 ranked third in the country with a 77.6% completion percentage. Michigan has two games remaining in October with an easy path to 8-0, but the schedule ramps up in a big way come November.

Florida State came out of its bye week and didn’t miss a beat. The Seminoles took on Virginia Tech and handled the Hokies with ease in the 39-17 victory.

Jordan Travis is still making a strong case for the Heisman Trophy as he threw for two touchdowns for the fifth straight game. The Seminoles are sprinting toward the ACC Championship, and they have another opportunity for a big win this week against Syracuse before a huge game against Duke next week.

No. 4 Texas | Bye

It seems surprising to see Texas in the top four of CBS Sports’ 12-team College Football Playoff projection after last week’s loss to Oklahoma in a Red River thriller. However, the Longhorns are still the favorite to win the Big 12, which is why they still secured a bye in the projections.

As for the four-team CFP, it won’t necessarily be easy for Texas to get back into the top four unless some other dominoes fall. The Longhorns’ schedule could be in their favor the rest of the way, though, as they enter the bye.

No. 12 Tulane at No. 5 Ohio State | Winner plays Texas

If Ohio State can get past Michigan and Penn State, the Buckeyes would be a lock for the top four. The margin of error is thin under the current College Football Playoff format, but there’d be a little more wiggle room under the 12-team model thanks to the win over Notre Dame last month.

As for Tulane, there’s not much of a chance the Green Wave make this year’s CFP. But they’d likely get a spot in the 12-team format if they win the American Athletic Conference because there’s room for the six highest-ranked conference champions.

Oklahoma now finds itself in the mix for the College Football Playoff after Dillon Gabriel helped lead the Sooners to the win over Texas. The Sooners ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25 this week after that game, and a Big 12 Championship would be the separator if they want to get back to the CFP.

In CBS Sports’ projection, Oklahoma would face Alabama, which is in the midst of a four-game winning streak after a 1-1 start. It’s the type of matchup that would draw plenty of eyeballs, however it’s hard to say if it can happen this season.

No. 10 Oregon at No. 7 USC | Winner plays Michigan

In a crowded Pac-12, Oregon and USC are squarely in the conversation for the conference championship. The Trojans are the favorite to win the league, though, which is why they got the higher seed in this projected matchup.

With Heisman contenders Bo Nix and Caleb Williams at quarterback, it’s safe to say all eyes will be on the Nov. 11 matchup between the Ducks and Trojans. If they were to meet in the CFP, though, it would add to the already high stakes before the two teams leave for the Big Ten.

No. 9 Washington at No. 8 Penn State | Winner plays Georgia

Penn State has been consistently toward the top of the rankings this year with an impressive offense and a defense filled with playmakers. The Nittany Lions will have ample opportunities to make their case for this year’s CFP, and they’d already be in the mix under the 12-team College Football Playoff model.

In CBS Sports’ projection, Penn State would be going up against Washington’s high-powered offense, led by new Heisman favorite Michael Penix Jr. The two teams will square off next year, regardless, as the Huskies move to the Big Ten — but a Playoff matchup would be even more exciting.

The first CFP rankings don’t come out for another couple weeks, but it’s looking like the committee will have some tough decisions to make. It adds to the importance of this month’s games as teams ramp up their push toward their conference championships.
