Aztecs notes: Basketball players banged up with a month to go before season opener

A San Diego State assistant coach joked that maybe they need to wrap players in bubble wrap for preseason practice.

The injury bug hasn’t completely bitten SDSU’s basketball team, but it seems to be buzzing around lately.

The Aztecs were down to nine healthy scholarship players by the end of practice Monday, which is exactly four weeks from the Nov. 6 season opener at Viejas Arena against Cal State Fullerton.

Darrion Trammell was in a shoulder sling. Reese Waters was getting treatment for back spasms. Freshman Magoon Gwath recently got his cast off after major ankle surgery. And Elijah Saunders was on the training table treating a gash over his eye after 6-foot-9, 240-pound Jaedon LeDee fell on him.

“You get banged up, you know?” coach Brian Dutcher said. “It’s OK because they’re nagging things. They’re not season-ending things. They’re just nagging issues that sometimes you can play through, sometimes you’re better off resting.”

In recent weeks, Jay Pal missed time with a high ankle sprain; B.J. Davis and Damarshay Johnson Jr. were out multiple practices from illness; Lamont Butler watched most of last Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage to rest sore ankles.

“If they’re guys who have played minutes for you in the past, they already know what they’re supposed to do,” Dutcher said. “It’s more important for new guys and young guys to be out here for a lot of the reps because it’s new system. We do things differently a little bit than other programs. When the veterans are out a day or two, I don’t worry about them losing ground. The new guys, you don’t want that to be extended because they have a lot to learn.”

The only serious injury is to Gwath, who is probably a month or more from getting on the court for live action. But he was expected to redshirt anyway.

Trammell’s shoulder – Dutcher said he’s had issues with it before – flared up over the weekend, and the senior guard was put into a sling to immobilize it with hopes of reducing the swelling.

Health permitting, Dutcher hopes to scrimmage again Wednesday. Dutcher, Trammell and Butler are headed to Las Vegas later that night for Mountain West media day Thursday.

Recruiting update

SDSU could get answers from two recruits in the next week or so. Pharaoh Compton and Thokbor “David” Majak, who took official campus visits recently, are expected to announce commitments soon.

The 6-8 Compton is regarded as a huge catch, a top 100 prospect from Arbor View High in Las Vegas whose five finalists are SDSU, Iowa, Tennessee, UNLV and LSU. He took trips to the first four before opting out a scheduled visit to LSU last weekend.

Majak is a raw 7-footer from South Sudan with promising agility who has been playing basketball for only a few years. He attends Dream City Christian High in the Phoenix area.

Compton, Majak and Taj Degourville — who verbally committed to SDSU last June — are all expected to play in a preseason tournament in Las Vegas this weekend.

The only other prospect to take an official visit last month is 6-7 Brody Kozlowski from Utah. SDSU is in his final six with USC, UCLA, BYU, Cal and Nevada, but the Aztecs are no longer thought to be pursuing him.

Alumni update

Matt Bradley had 22 points (5 of 5 on 3s) and five assists in one of his first games with the Rostock Seawolves of Germany’s first division … Adam Seiko had a 16-point game after making five 3s for Karlsruhe in Germany’s second division … Trey Pulliam had 16 points, six assists and five steals Saturday in the season opener for KK Cacak 94 of Serbia …

Nathan Mensah is in training camp with the Charlotte Hornets but is expected to spend most of the season with their G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. The Hornets’ preseason opener is Tuesday against Miami … The Boston Celtics signed Jordan Schakel for training camp, then quickly waived him with the intention of sending him to the G League’s Maine Celtics.
