The Thoughtful Shopper: your guide to autumn’s best sustainable fashion drops

Style

From B Corp certified brands to local designers using native craft and fabrications, here are September’s best fashion launches that tread lightly on the planet

Quiet Luxe

Merino wool button cardigan, €435, and merino wool rib tank dress, €398, laurenmanoogian.com

While quiet luxury is fashion’s favourite buzzword of late, Brooklyn-based designer Lauren Manoogian has been quietly chipping away at the pared-back aesthetic since founding her label 15 years ago. Her new autumn-winter collection has all of her design hallmarks: structured, everyday shapes, natural textures and comfort that oozes luxury. Like her pre-existing collections, the collection’s colourways are those of undyed yarns: think muted beiges and cereal shades, while small batch releases define her production. Prices from €150, laurenmanoogian.com

Pack a Punch

Sandalo hobo bag, available in black and rich tan, €315, landabags.com

Dublin-based handbag line Landa, founded by Argentine designer Silvana Landa McAdam, has introduced a series of new styles for the season ahead. There are texture and colour updates to her best-selling styles (like the Caoba quilted bag and a metallic gold leather), but the hero product is the new Sandalo bag. A slouchy hobo style made from Italian tumbled leather certified by the Leather Working Group and finished with eco-friendly oils, we can confirm it’s spacious, lightweight, and definitely worth the investment. €315, landabags.com

Golden Investment

Irish wool Palma coat, €720, and houndstooth tweed Kate dress, €595, noema.com

Curating a forever wardrobe is something Noema Damaris understands. The Dublin-based Mallorcan designer has a flair for creating hard-working pieces that will defy any trend cycle, and her latest Golden Mile collection is little different. The nine-piece edit features muted grey and black velvet suit separates, double-breasted tie wrap coats, and function-first dresses. Handcrafted from Wexford linen, Donegal wool, organic velvet and bamboo silk, her collection treads lightly on the planet too. Irish wool Palma coat, €720, and houndstooth tweed Kate dress, €595, noema.com

The Charmer

Resin chill pill green charm, €50, myfrkl.com

Jewellery shouldn’t cost the planet, and it shouldn’t be taken too seriously either. At least that’s the sentiment behind Angela Scanlon’s jewellery line ‘frkl.’ which she launched in 2021. The premise of her jewellery is that it is buildable: starting with a recycled brass base (a gold chain or minimalist hoops, for example) you then customise it with charms, pearls, and gemstones. Her latest Candy Pop collection of resin pearl charms are a welcome refresh of colour for autumn, from low-key pastels to brilliant pinks and earthy blues. Charms from €36, myfrkl.com

Blaze a Trail

Donegal tweed blazer in pink salt and pepper, €325, magee1886.com

It was Sarah Jessica Parker’s Instagram post documenting her holiday in Donegal that kind of elated the whole Irish internet. One of the pictures was that of a pink tweed blazer by Magee, tossed on a couch, which reaffirmed her affinity for Irish design. The blazer forms part of Magee’s new season collection, which offers premium investment pieces for men and women woven in Magee’s Donegal mill. Slow fashion by default, the fifth-generation family business is a mastercrafter in its field. Liked by SJP, liked by all. Donegal Tweed Blazer in pink salt and pepper, €325, magee1886.com

Sleep Tight

Organic cotton jersey T-shirts, €70, and boxer shorts, €50, teklafabrics.com

Danish lifestyle label Tekla is everything a Scandi brand is liked for: functional yet covetable design. Known for its homewares like bedding and tableware, Tekla has of late ventured into sleepwear and we’re not complaining. Its new collection of organic cotton boxer shorts and jersey T-shirts are cut with a unisex, relaxed fit, and are available in washed black, blue, white and striped colourways. And being a B Corp business, Tekla has reached the highest order of social and environmental certifications – something we can all get behind. Prices from €50, teklafabrics.com

The Essentials

Leather Working Group-certified leather riding boots, €489, essenthelabel.com

A new brand on our radar this season is footwear label ESSĒN. Short for essentials, the Melbourne label has a simple philosophy: buy less, choose better, wear longer. Designed in Australia but manufactured in Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese workshops (where some of the best leather crafters are found) ESSĒN’s footwear epitomises responsible design. Transparency is key too: each pair of shoes listed online offers information about how many people were involved in its production, the distance it clocked between suppliers and how many wears you can get out of the shoes – 728 is the magic number for most. Prices from €189, essenthelabel.com
