FAYETTEVILLE — Former Arkansas basketball player Reggie Chaney has died, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle on Monday.

A spokesman for the Houston Cougars, who Chaney played for from 2020-23, confirmed the news.

Chaney, 23, began his college career with the Razorbacks. He played for former head coach Mike Anderson during the 2018-19 season and was on current head coach Eric Musselman’s first roster at Arkansas in 2019-20.

“The Razorback men’s basketball family is devastated to hear of the loss of Reggie Chaney,” Musselman said in a statement through a team spokesman. “He was a relentless worker and loved by his coaches and teammates.

“His family is in our thoughts and prayers.”

Former Razorbacks guard Mason Jones, teammates with Chaney for two seasons at Arkansas, posted to social media, in part, “[Please] give Reggie his flowers. … Going to miss you brotha. … Real life brotha, roommate and one of the realest guys you will ever meet.”

With the Cougars, Chaney averaged 3.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 104 games, including 24 starts. He was named Sixth Man of the Year in the American Athletic Conference in 2022-23.

Chaney was part of three NCAA Tournament runs with Houston, including a Final Four team in 2021.

Chaney was a 3-star prospect, according to 247 Sports, out of Findlay Prep in Nevada. He averaged 13.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game as a senior.

Chaney initially signed with Arkansas over scholarship offers from TCU, Texas A&M, Wichita State and DePaul.
