Try a great smoked pork chop, a new flea market is coming and other business news in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Places to get good food and ice cream, renovations to the historic Schuler’s restaurant building, new businesses coming and others changing locations top recent business news in and around the Jackson County area.

Here’s some recent business news you might have missed.

The Trash Can is a sundae filled with candy at Spad’s Twisters

Spad’s Twisters opened in March, replacing Swiss Treat at 4005 Lansing Ave. The business was taken over by Rebecca Lewis, who continues to bring sweet treats to the area.

The ice cream shop specializes in soft serve treats. The menu features a range of cones, sundaes, shakes and flurries.

Some specialty items already have become popular, especially the Trash Can Sundae, which comes with vanilla soft serve and is topped with, Oreos, cookie dough, M&M’s, Reese’s, whipped cream and gummy worms, all inside of a plastic toy trash can.

The Royal Hotel lives again atop historic Schuler’s restaurant in Marshall

Construction is wrapping up on the renovation of The Royal Hotel, five rooms on the third floor of the Schuler’s restaurant building, 115 S. Eagle St. in downtown Marshall.

The historic hotel atop Schuler’s restaurant hosted hundreds of visitors for decades before it closed in the 1970s. Work is now being done to modernize the rooms, while maintaining a touch of some historic elements.

Plans are for the hotel to officially open on Friday, June 16, and reservations can be made now.

More space, more inventory highlights Nevermore Decor Store’s new Jackson location

Nevermore Decor Store is moving out of its “hidden” storefront in downtown Jackson and into a more visible location.

Amanda and Briston Bamm opened the home décor store in a small 400-square-foot space on the first floor of the Jackson County Tower Building, 120 W. Michigan Ave., in 2021. However, as the business has grown, they need more space.

The new space at 143 E. Michigan Ave. is around four times the size of the current store. This means the Bamms can add more items and still make the store less crowded for customers.

The smoked pork chop is a full-plate meal at Ken’s M60 Grill

Ken’s M60 Grill is a typical country restaurant that serves classic breakfast and lunch favorites.

Ken Foster took ownership of the Concord restaurant around six years ago and put his name in front of M60 Grill. While the restaurant has been around since 1952, he said he’s put his own flair into the menu.

Foster’s favorite dish on the menu is the Smoked Pork Chop. The meal comes with a well-flavored smoked pork chop, potatoes, eggs and toast.

Flea market, vendor space aims to help low-income residents start businesses in Jackson

Anthony Gittens of Jackson is helping low-income residents launch businesses through a vendor and flea market space at 318 W. Michigan Ave. The building in downtown Jackson will operate as an incubator for residents to build a business foundation, he said.

Gittens said many low-income residents don’t have access to loans, family wealth or other funding, and he wants to help them bridge that gap. Plans are still in the works, but people can rent a 10-foot-by-10-foot space in the 17,292-square-foot building sometime this summer.
