Sydney FC sweat on Cortnee Vine’s fitness after suspected calf injury

Sydney FC will be sweating on the fitness of winger Cortnee Vine for their Liberty A-League Semi Final clash against Western United on Sunday, after the winger suffered a suspected calf injury late in the Matildas’ 2-0 win over England.

Vine was substituted in the 86th minute and was seen clutching at her right calf, before she came from the field with the help of trainers.

The 25-year-old attacker had put in a solid showing prior to being forced from the field, coming on in place of Tameka Yallop in the first-half after she went down with an ankle injury before half-time.

Post-game, she spoke to Network 10 and wasn’t asked about the severity of her injury, but was seemingly in good spirits.

A Football Australia spokesperson said she would be assessed in the morning to see what the severity of her injury is, before she flies home ahead of Sydney’s Semi Final on Sunday.

Vine played an integral role in Sydney’s run to a third consecutive premiership, scoring seven goals and tallying a league-high eight assists in the regular season.

Prior to the England game and her suspected injury, former Matilda Grace Gill questioned whether this particular international camp would have an adverse effect on her finals preparation.

“What we’re seeing from her in the Matildas is a player who is really starting to mature,” Gill said.

“Bearing in mind that (the England game is) Tuesday for the girls, who will then have to get on an international flight, travel back – (in) Cortnee’s case to Australia – get back in presumably Wednesday at some point, sleep, rest, train, recover and all of those things that go into preparing for a game.

“She’s going to have to do that on a really tight timeframe.

“Cath (Cannulli), as you well know about managing player welfare, recovery and loading into big games, how important that will be particularly for Cortnee who will play a key part in Sydney FC’s game this Sunday.”
