Stan Wawrinka rediscovered his form late last year and it’s persisting in this new year as the Swiss player is still playing some solid Tennis.

He’s not at his peak or playing close to his peak but Wawrinka is still good enough to teach these young players a few tennis lessons. He started the year by playing some solid in the exhibition matches but since then it’s been somewhat of a struggle.

He didn’t put forward the same kind of level at the United Cup but he’s still managed to beat Alexander Bublik. His other match was against Hubert Hurkacz and those were his only two matches prior to the Australian Open. He’s favoured to win the match and for good reason.

A lot will come down to his fitness and how his body will handle a b05 format but he’s looked pretty sharp so if he can keep it in three it would help.

Molcan Winless Ahead of Australian Open

Alex Molcan arrived in Melbourne without any wins as his start to the season was not very good. The Slovakian player has high hopes for this year but he’s at his best on clay so this bad start is not shocking.

It’s been a struggle mostly because he faced really strong players that started the year better than him. He’s not well suited for the quick tennis courts unless he plays really well. Not the strongest of serves but pretty aggressive in his groundstrokes.

It can work if he doesn’t spray a lot of errors and there has been plenty of that. It will be crucial he keeps the error numbers to a minimum. It will be also important to stay aggressive as that is one way to make Wawrinka really nervous.

I can’t see him winning this one but perhaps if he can push it to five sets and tire him out. Yeah, maybe.

Stan Wawrinka is the better player on hard courts and is playing better to start the year. That is more than enough to back him to win this one.
