CLARA CITY — Even after losing more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds to graduation, the MACCRAY girls basketball team is cruising.

Facing off with a scrappy Lakeview squad Monday, the Wolverines won the second half and secured the 45-39 Camden Conference victory.

“We kind of came out slow and Lakeview is better than their (3-8) record says,” said MACCRAY head coach Shaun Condon. “They’re a good team and they gave us a lot to handle. We made some changes in the second half and we were able to come away with it.”

The Wolverines are now 8-3 overall and third in the Camden North at 6-2 behind 6-0 Lac qui Parle Valley and 7-1 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.

“If you would have told me we’d be 8-3 at the start of the year, I’d say you’re crazy,” Condon said. “I’ll take it.

“All five of (our starters) got playing time last year. Now, they’re stepping into bigger roles and doing better now. We’ve won seven of our last eight.”

Holding onto a one-point lead at halftime, Condon emphasized play in the paint if the Wolverines wanted to hang onto the victory.

“One, we had to actually rebound; we didn’t rebound at all in the first half,” Condon said. “Personnel wise, we changed up how we guarded and made certain girls go left. Offensively, we took too many threes, so we had to start getting into the paint.”

Helping that inside charge was 6-foot freshman forward Brielle Janssen. She finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, three assists and a pair of blocks.

“She’s averaging 17-to-18 points a game,” Condon said of Janssen. “She’s not playing like a freshman.”

Junior Ella Kienitz added 10 points for the Wolverines. Emma Thein helped on the glass with nine boards.

“Every night, different people are stepping up,” Condon said.

MACCRAY is on the road Thursday for another conference tilt against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at Tracy.

Canby rallied from a 19-14 halftime deficit by scoring 36 second-half points in its victory over Renville County West at Renville.

Emily Lippert had 19 points and Holly Hinderks contributed seven steals for RCW. The jaguars play host to Yellow Medicine East at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Renville.

Up by three at halftime, Minneota outscored Dawson-Boyd 32-9 in the second half en route to a Camden Conference win at Dawson.

Central Minnesota Christian picked up its first win since Dec. 16, ending a four-game losing skid. The Bluejays earned a Camden Conference win over Yellow Medicine East in Prinsburg.

Pacing CMCS was Sienna Duininck with 23 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Taatjes put up a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Hannah Stark led the Sting with 11 points. Hope Stark tallied nine points.
