Qualifier Marterer Hoping to Turn Things Around

Once ranked 45th in the world, Marterer has fallen to outside the top 150 on the rankings and currently is more tuned in to the Challenger circuit than the top-level ATP tournaments.

Which is also why, he has featured in only two ATP tournaments this season – both Grand Slams, the Australian Open and Wimbledon. In both those tournaments, he needed to qualify to get to the main draw.

While at the Australian Open Marterer lost his opener itself, he managed to surprise Aljaz Bedene in the Wimbledon first round to register his only win for the season.

Now, three qualifying wins at the US Open later, he has made it through to the main draw here but up against Cilic, winning another match might not be an easy bet.
