Otis Commits to Setting Science-Based Targets To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Otis Worldwide Corporation (NYSE: OTIS) today announced its intention to adopt near-term science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets, which it has formally submitted to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for review.

The proposal includes proposed GHG emission reduction targets for Scopes 1, 2, and 3 compared to a baseline of 2021. This SBTi pledge complements Otis’ existing public Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives and emphasizes Otis’ commitment to tackle climate change with strong and principled action.

The science-based goals (SBTs) are based on what the most recent research identifies as crucial for attaining the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2030.

“We are committed to meeting our ESG goals and to driving GHG reductions that have an impact on our business and the communities we serve,” stated Judy Marks, Chair, CEO, and President of Otis. “We believe that we all have a role to play.” Working with SBTi to establish our near-term, science-based aims is a critical step in our journey toward sustainability.”

SBTi is a cooperation of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), and is a pledge of the We Mean Business Coalition. It develops and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, provides resources and information to eliminate adoption hurdles, and independently evaluates and approves companies’ targets.
