Chemours in Partnership With the National Hockey League Invest in STEM Program for Students in Chester, Pa.

Chemours, a worldwide chemistry firm, has expanded its Stem Program support for students at Drexel Neumann Academy in Chester, Pa., in collaboration with the National Hockey League (NHL®). The cooperation for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs for fourth through eighth grade children is currently in its second year.

“The next generation of chemists and material scientists that will help the world unlock new innovations and drive progress to address pressing sustainability challenges, including in the sport of hockey,” stated Dr. Chuck Allgood, Technical Fellow – Thermal & Specialty Solutions at Chemours. “It is an honor to continue our support for STEM education, which will inspire students to discover a love of learning and open their world to potential future career opportunities as they progress in their education.”

“We believe that hockey instills life skills in youth both on and off the ice,” said Omar Mitchell, NHL Vice President of Sustainable Infrastructure and Growth Initiatives. “We are pleased that our collaboration with Chemours extends beyond the ice rink and into the classroom, particularly in the area of STEM education for underserved youth.” Our combined efforts will inspire young students to pursue their aspirations and become future leaders in their communities.”

Since the program’s inception in March 2022, approximately 100 kids have taken part, benefiting from learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, as well as at their new on-site STEM lab. During the 2022-2023 academic year, students met with Chemours specialists on a monthly basis and visited the cutting-edge Chemours facility.

“The first year of the program has been truly inspirational and empowering for our students, and we are thrilled to see the opportunities continue,” said Drexel Neumann Academy President Alice Sylvester. “We are extremely grateful for the investment made by Chemours and the NHL® to keep this program running—and growing!” Their dedication lays a good basis for our pupils to develop bright futures.”

Drexel Neumann Academy’s STEM Program involves support and funding for a science lab and equipment, as well as education, hands-on learning, and mentorship from Chemours scientists and engineers, as well as other STEM professionals and volunteers from the associated organizations. Chemours created the program in collaboration with the NHL® as part of the company’s Corporate Responsibility Commitment objective of investing $50 million to enhance science.
