Cummins Plant in the UK Powers Up New Solar Installation To Reduce Carbon

Cummins Plant – Cummins Inc., the global leader in power technology, has opened a new state-of-the-art solar array, the company’s third largest company-owned solar installation, to help power its engine facility in Daventry, United Kingdom.

The system can create 1.8 megawatts of renewable energy, which is enough to power 746 household dwellings for a year. Even before the solar array was operational, the Daventry plant had made substantial progress in reducing emissions, reaching a 30% reduction.

“We are very excited about the opening of our new solar farm at the Cummins Daventry plant,” said Roy Free, factory Manager at Cummins Daventry. “…With the new solar farm up and running, we are certain that we will make even more important contributions to decreasing our carbon footprint and guaranteeing a brighter future for future generations.”

The factory plans to lower emissions by an additional 5.5%, in line with the Cummins Power Systems business segment’s 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target. The effort also corresponds with Cummins’ PLANET 2050 environmental sustainability strategy’s 2030 aim of lowering total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from facilities and operations by 50%.

Cummins’ Daventry Engine Plant has been running a generator set recovery system since 2021, exporting test voltages and frequencies back to the grid. The Cummins Daventry factory had already recovered 1 million KW/h of energy with this method as of August 2023. Over the next few months, the newly opened solar installation will enhance the quantity returned. The two improvements will cut the amount of electricity imported into the Daventry plant by around 25%.

The Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, James Saunders Watson, and the Mayor of Daventry, Councillor Ted Nicholl, joined various plant leaders in a ceremony marking the launch of the new solar system.

The Daventry facility is an important part of Cummins’ global operations, specialized in the production of modern power generating sets and high-horsepower engines for a variety of industries, including rail, mining, and others.

Cummins will construct a new state-of-the-art logistics center in Daventry in 2021, supporting operations throughout the UK. The facility received a BREEAM Outstanding grade for building sustainability, placing it in the top 1% of non-domestic buildings in the UK.
