Amanda Sturgeon Appointed as CEO of The Biomimicry Institute

The Biomimicry Institute, a global non-profit dedicated to fostering nature-inspired innovation, is pleased to announce the appointment of Amanda Sturgeon as its new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding outgoing Executive Director Beth Rattner.

Amanda provides extensive expertise building high-impact non-profits, as well as a strong interest in Biomimicry and the relationship between people and nature. Amanda is pleased to bring her vision for allowing a future where people and environment thrive together to The Institute as an architect and non-profit leader with a proven track record of global leadership in regenerative and biophilic design.

Amanda previously worked as the founding CEO of Built by Nature, where she established the Built by Nature network and grant fund across Europe. Amanda was previously the CEO of the International Living Future Institute, where she expanded the organization, launched new programs, and formed a global partner network. As an architect, she has long advocated for biomimicry and regenerative architecture, penning ‘Creating Biophilic Buildings’ in 2017.

“Amanda and I have crossed paths in the biomimicry community repeatedly over the last decade,” said Janine Benyus, co-founder of The Biomimicry Institute and author of Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. “She possesses a rare combination of strategic organizational scaling and an authentic passion for biomimicry.” I’m overjoyed to be here.

“I am honored to join The Biomimicry Institute and lead an organization that has been at the forefront of innovative solutions inspired by nature,” Amanda Sturgeon said of the new position. I am excited to work with the great team and our worldwide community to effect positive change and build a more sustainable future.”

Amanda will start her full-time job on November 1, 2023. She will collaborate with Beth Rattner to smooth the transition of organizational leadership as Beth devotes her full attention to leading Design for Transformation (D4T), a strategic initiative she initiated for the Institute in 2019.
