Bacardí Rum Inaugurates System To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 50%

The new CHP system substitutes propane gas for heavy fuel oil, allowing the site to use greener energy. The system will generate 100% of the energy consumed at the campus, which includes the distillery, offices, and the Casa BACARD visitor center, one of the island’s most popular tourist spots.

The 50% reduction in BACARD rum’s GHG emissions is a big step forward for the family-owned enterprise in decreasing emissions internationally. Other premium products in the Bacardi portfolio include PATRN® tequila, GREY GOOSE® vodka, BOMBAY SAPPHIRE®, DEWAR’S® Blended Scotch whisky, and many more. Bacardi has promised to reducing its GHG emissions by half globally by 2025.

“At Bacardi, we are committed to reducing GHG emissions by reducing energy consumption and switching to the most sustainable form of energy where our beloved brands are manufactured.” “We are constantly looking for ways to take more positive steps toward our ultimate goal of Net Zero across our sites,” says Edwin Zayas, Bacardi Corporation’s Vice President of Operations.

Other methods that the BACARD rum distillery is always pioneering and adopting new environmental practices are as follows:

The production of biogas from waste water, which subsequently powers the distillation and generates electricity — more than 60% of the distillery’s energy is generated in this manner.

A novel treatment method that aids in the cleaning of biogas and the reduction of environmental impacts;

Recapturing 95% of the heat generated during distillation to reduce energy use;

Creating a new project to capture CO2 from the fermentation process and feed it to the island’s sparkling drinks industry.

Bacardi Corporation, a subsidiary of Bacardi Limited, was established in Puerto Rico in 1936 and has been producing “the World’s Most Awarded” rum ever since. The current distillery, erected in 1958 on 127 acres near Catao, is regarded as the “Cathedral of Rum” and is the world’s largest premium rum distillery.

“As a family-owned business, we take great pride in safeguarding the legacy of future generations,” says Magaly Feliciano, Global Sustainability Director. “The work we are doing today will help build a more sustainable future for our people and the planet.”

Bacardi has set a number of targets that it intends to achieve by 2025 as part of its Corporate Responsibility initiative, Good Spirited, and in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development targets.

These global goals, in addition to the company’s pledge to eliminate all plastic by 2030, include:

-50% reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions at Bacardi manufacturing sites; 25% reduction in water consumption at Bacardi manufacturing sites;

-Sustainable sourcing of all major raw ingredients and packaging;

-100% recyclable product packaging; 40% recycled percentage of product packaging materials

At all Bacardi production plants, there is no waste to landfill.
