Duke Energy Honors Eight Organizations With 2023 Power Partner Awards

Duke Energy has announced the recipients of its 2023 Power Partner Award. 

The yearly program, which began in 1992, recognizes businesses and other groups that have excelled in sustainability, safety, service, and issue solving.

“We value our large commercial, industrial, and government customers and encourage them to strive for organizational excellence,” said Chris Edge, vice president of large corporate customers at Duke Energy. “All the winners awarded this year have innovated in ways that benefit their employees, stakeholders and greater community.”

The following organizations have won the 2023 Power Partner award: 

Alamance-Burlington School System  

Burlington, N.C. 

Category: Sustainability Excellence 

The Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) serves Alamance County and the city of Burlington, North Carolina, and has an enrollment of roughly 23,000 pupils. The school district is dedicated to participating in Duke Energy’s Energy Efficiency (EE) Design Assistance programs for new facilities and has enrolled facilities in major retrofitting projects that will result in significant energy savings. 

Milliken & Company  

Spartanburg, S.C. 

Category: Sustainability Excellence 

Milliken & Company, a textile, floor covering, and chemical maker, collaborates with Duke Energy to find economically feasible solutions to satisfy the company’s 2025 sustainability targets. Milliken’s Magnolia/Allen factory in Blacksburg, South Carolina, enrolled into Duke Energy’s EE initiatives, utilizing unique performance incentives to eliminate coal as an on-site fuel source and drastically cut air pollutant emissions. Milliken has constructed two solar panels at their Roger Milliken Center (RMC) Global Headquarters as part of Duke Energy’s net metering program. 

FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotech USA  

Holly Springs, N.C. 

Category: Solution Innovation 

FujiFilm Diosynth announced in March 2021 that Holly Springs, North Carolina had been chosen as the site for their new cell production facility. FujiFilm plans to invest $2 billion in the property and surrounding neighborhood by 2025, producing 725 skilled jobs paying an average of $100,000. Duke Energy will power the 16 MW complex, which will house North America’s largest cultural bio-pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO). To meet market demand, FujiFilm will be able to develop transformational pharmaceuticals at the facility. Through a 15-year Premier Power arrangement, FujiFilm has also teamed with Duke Energy to offer backup energy to the site. Furthermore, the campus’ design and construction will be consistent with Fujifilm’s Sustainable Value Plan. 

Purdue Research Foundation  

West Lafayette, Ind.  

Category: Service Excellence 

Purdue Research Park and Discovery Park District are two important development areas within Duke Energy Indiana’s service territory owned by the Purdue Research Foundation (PRF). Both locations are bringing jobs and capital investment to the West Lafayette, IN area. In 2023, three projects will begin construction at these locations: the Rolls-Royce High Altitude Test Facility, the Rolls-Royce Hybrid Electric Test Facility, and the Ascension St. Vincent Hospital campus. Duke Energy Indiana and PRF have collaborated extensively to build a long-term planning strategy for these assets to handle future growth. 

Duke University has created the Duke Climate Commitment, a university-wide effort to combat climate change. The institution is a participant in Duke Energy’s Green Source Advantage (GSA) Program, which has permitted the development of three solar arrays totaling 100.9 MW of renewable production. Furthermore, the university has constructed net-metered solar arrays totaling 876 kW of sustainable energy.
