Mary Kay Highlights the Importance of Women’s Leadership and Private Sector Engagement in Conservation

Mary Kay Inc., a corporate sustainability advocate and signatory to the UN Global Compact Sustainable Ocean Principles, continues to play a vital role in ocean conservation. Earlier this year, the beauty brand created a ground-breaking, user-friendly portal that provides marine practitioners with vital counsel, decision-support tools, and practical expertise. Following the news, Mary Kay attended the Economist Impact-organized 10th World Ocean Summit and Expo 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The World Ocean Summit is an annual global event that brings together the ocean community’s most diverse stakeholders, including industry and finance, governments, national and international politicians, civil society, and academics. Over 1,500 people from over 100 nations attended the three-day summit, where 188 speakers addressed some of the ocean’s most critical issues, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Sandra Silva, General Manager of Mary Kay Portugal, was a distinguished panelist at the summit’s “Putting Coral Reef Restoration at the Heart of Ocean Conservation Action” discussion, where she joined other notable speakers such as Yabanex Batista from the United Nations Global Fund for Coral Reefs, Tom Moore from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Saudi Arabia), and others.

The World Ocean Initiative extends the momentum and focal point of the World Ocean Summit into a year-round ocean program that powers the full capabilities of Economist Impact, combining the ingenuity of a think tank with the creativity of a media brand to engage a globally influential audience. The World Ocean Initiative attempts to educate, motivate, and encourage improved collaboration among corporations, policymakers, investors, scientists, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in order to find answers to the most pressing ocean challenges and opportunities.

For over 32 years, Mary Kay has worked to improve ocean health and coral reef awareness through its relationship with The Nature Conservancy. One of the primary programs Mary Kay supports is “Super Reefs,” which identifies, protects, and grows a global network of highly productive coral reefs.
