Yum China Introduces New Local Ingredients in “Grow Local” CSR Project

Yum China, the Chinese operator of the KFC and Pizza Hut brands, has recently unveiled a new pasta dish containing citron daylily from Shanxi province as part of its Grow Local project, which encourages the use of locally produced produce in its menu choices. The citron daylily is noted for its distinct flavor and is grown in Datong, China, which is one of the leading producers of this crop. The new pasta dish is now available in over 130 Pizza Hut outlets in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces for a limited period. 

Yum China has supported local development for many years by leveraging its skills in supply chain management and product R&D. now the inception of the Grow Local Initiative in 2018, Pizza Hut has introduced high-quality items such as Yunnan truffles, Guizhou dragon fruits, and Shaanxi apples, which have now become menu specialities. Meanwhile, in 2022, KFC will introduce Dark Soy Milk made from Tartary buckwheat harvested in the remote Liangshan district of Sichuan province.

Yum China has also used its e-commerce platforms to sell pomegranates from Yunnan province, Zigui oranges from Hubei province, and lemons from Sichuan province in order to promote local agricultural products. Yum China is committed to growing the Grow Local project into a sustainable agriculture program by offering technical help and training to farmers through its strong supply chain management and procedures. Since its inception in 2018, the Grow Local project has held hundreds of online and in-person training events to teach farmers about crop rotation, soil health, pest management, and other topics.
