Southwire Team Members Energized by Formula E E-Prix Experience in Berlin

Speed, Strategy, Sustainability, Opportunity… these are just a few of the first impressions from the Southwire team who recently attended the 2023 SABIC Berlin E-Prix, Southwire’s first Race as the official wire and cable provider for the world’s fastest growing motorsport.

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship brings dramatic racing to the heart of some of the world’s most renowned cities, while also serving as an elite motorsport platform for the world’s leading automobile manufacturers to promote electric car innovation. Since its beginning, it has been the only sport to be certified as Net Zero Carbon.

The German race was a doubleheader conducted at the famous Tempelhof Airport Circuit in Berlin. The two races, Rounds 7 and 8 of Season 9 of the series, represented the halfway point in this year’s calendar while providing some of the most furious and spectacular racing to date. During Saturday’s race, the 22 drivers made a record-breaking 190 overtakes in 43 laps, bringing the weekend total to 362 overtakes in 83 laps. The weekend also saw the European race debut of the series’ all-new GEN3 car, which is the quickest, lightest, most powerful, and most efficient electric race car ever built.

The opening day of racing coincided with Earth Day, and the championship reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability with measures like as planting and recycling.

“Southwire is in so many different markets, from renewables to utilities to constructing wire and more.” “We really are in the heart of the electrical industry,” said Yuhsin Hawig, Southwire’s vice president of applications engineering. “Through our partnership with Formula E, we are connecting with and learning from other businesses that have a sustainability mindset.”

The Berlin race additionally indicated the first time a Southwire cable was chosen and used in a Formula E application.”We collaborate with a company called VoltServer, which invented a new type of power transmission called digital electricity, which we’ve used in other applications like telecom and intelligent buildings,” said Charles Hume, Southwire’s director of innovative technologies. “When we first started working with Formula E, VoltServer approached us and requested a specialised cable for use in the Formula E environment.” I’ve been interested in electric vehicles for a long time, so seeing our technology used here is a terrific experience.”

As Southwire’s title-sponsored race in Portland approaches on June 24, the excitement surrounding the prospects for improvement in emerging technologies related to the sport is palpable. The Southwire crew has gained new knowledge, ideas, and expectations as a result of this encounter.

“As the world advances towards electrification, we offer solutions today that can be utilised in this application, but there is also plenty of chance to innovate for the applications that are coming in the future,” said Bo Quick, Southwire’s vice president of Sustainability. “By connecting and learning alongside the other companies related to Formula E, we can all innovate together.”
