Energy News Monitor – A K Sharma, the UP (Uttar Pradesh) urban development minister, opened the nation’s first solar-powered smart bus station with a variety of amenities. He said that the station, built in line with Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s vision, will improve Varanasi’s transportation system while also offering many smart services to passengers who board buses along this route. According to Sharma, the Chief Minister (CM) Yogi Adityanath made sure to implement the notion after the Prime Minister (PM) suggested it and built this bus station as part of the smart city initiative. It was built as part of Hindustan Unilever Limited’s (HUL) corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts to support the municipal corporation’s Varanasi Smart City initiative.

Enviro India, a Gurugram-based facilities management business, has so far placed 1098 solar panels on its residential and commercial properties around Delhi-NCR. By generating 4,941 kilowatt peak (kWp) units of energy per day, the effort has drastically reduced energy consumption expenditures. Enviro India has contributed more than INR 50 million (mn) to a number of initiatives in various Indian cities. The company intends to get the most advanced batteries and solar panels from nations like Taiwan and Germany. Solar energy is a practical strategy to lessen dependency on fossil fuels and achieve self-sufficiency as the globe progresses toward sustainable energy sources. As India works to replace fossil fuels with Renewable Energy, this Enviro India effort will show to be quite effective.

According to an Arthur D Little (ADL) report, India will need an additional $300 billion (bn) in investments to reach its 500 GW renewable energy capacity goal by 2030. With 165 GW of installed generation capacity, the nation is on track to reach its target of meeting 50% of its energy demands through renewable sources, according to the report. According to the ADL viewpoint, India should concentrate on expanding its capacity for solar and wind production. The transmission and distribution sectors of related industries, such as green hydrogen generation and other renewable energy production, also require major reform.

Goa’s power minister, Ramkrishna Sudin Dhavalikar, stated that he anticipates Germany will contribute technical know-how and funding to the state’s renewable energy projects. Goa plans to use only renewable energy sources for all of its energy needs by the year 2045. He stated at the recent Indo-German core partnering meet on sustainable energy and environmental technologies that Goa is at the forefront of encouraging solar energy and other non-conventional renewable energy to lower carbon emissions to zero. The Minister invited Goa-based private sector businesses to look into possibilities for implementing green technology and energy initiatives there.

Punjab will soon develop a plan for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions through the utilization of cutting-edge clean energy technologies. According to the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), the state-owned organisation is working hard to meet the goal of 2,500 MW of renewable energy capacity in Punjab. The energy action plan will make it easier for all stakeholder departments to adopt energy efficiency and renewable energy in their organisations at the state level.

In West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand, Tata Power Solar Systems announced the introduction of affordable solar off-grid solutions. Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd.’s wholly-owned subsidiary Tata Power Solar Systems Limited (TPSSL) (TPREL). The off-grid solutions come in 11 variations ranging from 1 to 10 Kw with a 5-year warranty and combine highly efficient solar modules, inverters, and batteries. By reducing consumers’ reliance on pricey and environmentally damaging alternatives like diesel generators during the night and power outages, these solar off-grid solutions allow them to access sustainable electricity. These solar off-grid solutions are charged during the day.

Utility Scale Solar Projects

A letter of award for the construction of a 150 MW solar project in Solapur, Maharashtra, has been given to the Tata Power Company subsidiary Tata Power Renewable Energy. Through tariff-based competitive bidding, followed by an online reverse auction, the letter of award (LoA) was obtained. Within 18 months of the day the buying power agreement (PPA) was executed, the project would be put into operation. With this, Tata Power Renewable Energy’s total renewable energy capacity has increased to 5,786 MW, with 3,877 MW of that capacity installed (Solar: 2,949 MW; Wind: 928 MW); and 1,909 MW under various phases of implementation..

Hydro Power

The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) and the government of Meghalaya entered into a contract for the commissioning of three hydroelectric projects with a combined generation capacity of 235 MW. According to the agreement, the NEEPCO would construct the Umiam stages 1, 2, and 3. The Umiam stage 3 is nearing completion, and NEEPCO anticipates beginning the implementation phase shortly. With a 70% loan, Stages I and II would each cost about INR17.50 billion.

According to Low Yen Ling, the minister of state for the ministry of commerce and industry, Singapore’s energy regulator will introduce new emissions regulations for fossil fuel-fired power production units in 2023. According to the minister, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) will hold industry consultations in the upcoming months before announcing specifics about the criteria. The new regulations are a result of a statute the city-state approved last year that gave the EMA the authority to establish benchmarks for greenhouse gas emissions. The action comes after Singapore announced intentions to lower its 2030 carbon dioxide emissions target to 60 million tonnes (CO2).
