Do oil giants are interested in an alternate way of refueling vehicles?

One of the global oil leaders, Bp is partnering up with Hertz for building an EV fast chargers network with high-demand locations.

Hertz Corporation is one of the leading American car rental companies. It is based in Estero, Florida. The other brands associated with the company are Dollar Rent-A-Car, Firefly Car Rental, and Thrifty Car Rental. Hertz holds a market share of 36%. The company was founded by Walter L. Jacobs. The revenue was recorded as $7.336 billion in 2021.

Hertz is also in partnership with Uber and a deal with General Motors to purchase 175,000 electric vehicles such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, and BrightDrop.

Bp Pulse formerly known as Chargemaster Limited is also a supplier of Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. It is based in Milton Keynes, England. They provide service in charging units for domestic purposes, business, and public use. They got one of the largest networks in the UK.

Chargermasters are the only ones to produce rapid chargers in the UK.

As reported in Electrek, “In September, Hertz and Bp signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a national EV charging network. The plans include using Bp Pulse, the oil giant’s EV charging division, to lead the rollout.”

The partnership enabled Bp Pulse to manage the charging infrastructure by Hertz with their Omega software. The software got the capability to use real-time data and showcase it for power usage, pricing, and more.

The charging solutions are also enabling Hertz to expand its zero-emission EV fleet. As Hertz is operating with 100,000 Tesla Model 3 and also Model Y. Hertz is also placing a bulk order of 175,000 GM electric cars.

The initiatives supported Hertz’s tens of thousands of EVs in 38 US states. California Energy Commission (CEC) will fund a $2 million grant partially near the LAX project. The new project is also aiming to “mitigate the environmental impact.”

Jeff Nieman, SVP of operations initiatives at Hertz, says:

Our aim is to provide Hertz customers with access to a national network of chargers that makes the experience of renting an electric vehicle convenient and seamless. Rideshare drivers are essential to the mobility landscape and more than 25,000 Uber drivers have rented EVs through Hertz to date. We are thrilled to partner with bp pulse to offer this charging hub to those drivers at one of Hertz’s great sites near LAX. And it’s just the beginning”.

According to Patty Monohan, lead California energy commissioner for Transportation:

“Vehicles employed by California’s ride-hailing fleets make up 2.5 percent of the vehicle population, but consume 30 percent of all public fast charging. The California Energy Commission is proud to support projects like the Gigahub network by bp pulse, near LAX in partnership with Hertz, two transportation powerhouses who are working together to help electrify ride-hailing and rental fleets and cut pollution in communities”.

More than 100,000 EV chargers are aimed to be rolled out by the decade’s end through the BP Pulse division.

In my opinion, it was not surprising to see that the oil giants are also keenly investing in the electric vehicle fleet market as well as expanding their network through different partnerships. The oil giants got the proper resources as well as charging stations with little changes, they can expand the charging station networks like the traditional fuel cars.
