The Failure of “It Follows”: A Disillusioned Review of a Mediocre Horror Film

As a vehement advocate for the integrity of cinema, I held great expectations for the much-acclaimed “It Follows”, a Film with a regrettable 95% rating on the putrid site Rotten Tomatoes. However, my high hopes were shattered as the credits rolled and I was left with a profound sense of disillusionment and despair.

“It Follows” was an extraordinary failure on all fronts, a rare occurrence in the film industry. The characters were bland, the plot was non-existent, and the pacing was slower than a sloth on quaaludes. Any Attempt at building tension or suspense was weak at best, leaving me with nothing but boredom and contempt for the entire production.

Perhaps the film attempted to convey a message about the dangers of promiscuity, but any such message was lost amid the sheer ineptitude of the filmmaking. Instead, we were subjected to a never-ending parade of cheap scares and tired cliches, all performed with the grace of a toddler attempting brain surgery.

From the start, it was clear that the director’s sole focus was on style, with no regard for substance. The excessive and indulgent use of cross-dissolves and shallow visuals seemed to be a pathetic attempt to mask the lack of depth in the script. The plot was an afterthought, barely there to begin with, and the dialogue was an insipid, mind-numbingly sluggish drawl that left me feeling as though I was trapped in a perpetual line at the DMV.

It was as if the filmmakers had mistaken artifice for artistry, imbuing every frame with a self-importance that was both laughable and nauseating. The characters were nothing more than caricatures, their motivations and actions implausible and inscrutable. The attempts at creating tension and suspense were feeble and transparent, failing to elicit any semblance of emotion from the audience.

However, it was not just the lack of plot or significant dialogue that left me unimpressed. The noticeable absence of a well-defined antagonist rendered the film nothing more than filler, lacking fully-realized characters or substantial plot points. Meanwhile, the soundtrack was a tragic failure, failing to provide the much-needed vitality to an otherwise dull and lackluster film.

One would expect that a horror film with such a flimsy premise would at least attempt to compensate with a haunting score, but alas, the musical accompaniment was as uninspired as the rest of the film. Instead of evoking fear or dread, it merely served to emphasize the film’s tediousness and lack of direction.

It was as if the filmmakers had given up on attempting to create a truly memorable film, settling instead for a mind-numbingly mediocre product that was neither frightening nor thought-provoking. In the end, “It Follows” was nothing more than a forgettable exercise in banality, leaving me with the impression that the true horror was the realization that I had wasted valuable time on this cinematic travesty.

What truly puzzled me, however, was the unnecessary and gratuitous use of nudity. The random shots of individual breasts, pages torn from pornographic magazines, and the overtly creepy focus on Jay’s feet served no purpose in advancing the plot and reeked of a desperate attempt to titillate the audience. And who could forget the absurd sight of the old man standing on the roof, naked as the day he was born, intended to instill fear but instead left me howling with laughter.

The elusive glue that binds a psychological horror film together is the very illusion or belief that at any given moment, the story, director, or actors may conjure something that would truly shock, scare, or horrify the viewer. Yet, from the onset, it became painfully clear that the story and director of “It
…it was a clumsy and ham-fisted attempt that failed to resonate on any meaningful level. The film lacked the necessary nuance and subtlety to convey any sort of complex message, instead resorting to simplistic scare tactics and cheap visual tricks.

Overall, “It Follows” was a disappointment of epic proportions, a film that failed to deliver on any of its promises or potential. The lack of substance, poor character development, and clumsy attempts at horror made for a forgettable and tedious experience that left me feeling empty and unfulfilled.

As someone who holds the art of cinema in high regard, it was disheartening to see such a mediocre and insipid film receive such high praise and acclaim. It serves as a testament to the declining standards of the industry and the lack of discernment among modern audiences.

In the end, “It Follows” was nothing more than a pale imitation of true horror, a film that relied on tired tropes and gimmicks to create a hollow and unsatisfying experience. As a lover of the genre, I can only hope that future filmmakers will strive for something more substantial and meaningful, something that truly explores the depths of fear and terror that the human psyche can conjure.
