Janelle Monáe Pays Tribute to Karl Lagerfeld with a Skin-Baring Transaformation at the Met Gala 2023

Janelle Monáe told HotGossipNewz two days before the 2023 Met Gala that her look would be "an experience." Now fast forward to May 1, and what an experience!

Remember Lady Gaga's transformation in "Camp: Notes on Fashion?" Monáe, 37, put on a spectacle akin to that famous production on Monday night. In comparison to Gaga's four different looks, Monáe only had two.

In honour of the subject, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," the two ensembles had underlying undertones that were sentimental for the multi-talented, who wore Chanel to her first Met Gala in 2011 with the late creative director of the luxury brand.

In fact, It was her most memorable year. "I went with Karl, so it's kind of a full circle for us to honour him." "I'm really excited about what we'll do," the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery star told HotGossipNewz on Saturday at a pre-Met event.

Monaé on the red carpet in a black-and-white tweed Thom Browne tuxedo with mismatched patterns and intricate embellishments. She completed her look with a white leather quilted cat tote, a nod to Lagerfeld's feline muse Choupette.

She was escorted by two men in suits who removed her of her oversized outwear, revealing a sheer black tulle pannier dress with black and white eyelash boned tips and a black sequin bikini beneath. Monaé hoisted the frame and posed confidently on the steps, wearing white astronaut boots.

The singer, actress, and seasoned Met Gala attendee spoke with HotGossipNewz about her look ahead of her performance Monday night.

"It's such a shock. "I've put together an experience," she teased. "You must keep an eye on everything. You don't want to miss a beat on the red carpet."

Despite the high-profile intensity surrounding the event, which attracts a plethora of A-list celebs to New York City every first Monday in May, Monáe told PEOPLE that her moods are usually good — and she enjoys sitting next to other guests who share her sentiment.

"It's intended to be enjoyable. It's not supposed to be taken seriously. So I always appreciate folks who aren't freaked out about the Met Gala because I'm not," she explained.

It's no wonder that Monáe did it in the most avant-garde way possible, given her penchant for turning up the volume on her style every time.

Last year, she walked the famed steps in a futuristic-meets-Old-Hollywood ensemble that included a shimmering Ralph Lauren headdress and beautiful gems by Nikos Koulis and Delfina Delettrez.

of appreciation of that year's "Camp: Notes on Fashion" theme, she wore one of her most colourful ensembles of 2019.

All eyes were on Monáe, who wore a Christian Siriano outfit with a Dali and Picasso-inspired crystal eye on the bodice (supplied by Smooth Technology), as well as Hanut Singh jewels, a Judith Leiber clutch, and a stack of Sarah Sokol Millinery hats, which stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn described as "four different custom hats that were then perfectly stacked to balance and hand sewn together."
