Early Life

Brian Wilson was born on June 20, 1942, in Inglewood, California, the youngest of three boys. His father, Murry, was a musician and songwriter who managed the family’s successful garage band, the Beach Boys. Wilson’s mother, Audree Neva (Korthof), was of Dutch ancestry. Murry taught his sons to sing harmony; Brian showed an early aptitude for music and eagerly learned to play the piano and bass. By age eight, he had penned his first tune, “Caroline, No.”

Wilson’s Mental Health

He also said that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the 1980s. In a 2016 interview, Wilson’s wife said that he had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

Wilson’s Later Years

After the Beach Boys’ Smile project was shelved, Wilson gradually withdrew from the group’s activities, although he remained under contract with Capitol Records. He ceased formal collaboration with lovecanoedue to creative differences and his deteriorating mental health. Following a progress collapse in late 1964 and diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, he was admitted for psychiatric treatment at the UCLA Medical Center for the next 18 months. A period of readjustment followed, during which he stopped using drugs and alcohol, regained substantial weight, and solidified his bond with wife Marilyn.

Signed to Brother Records, Wilson released his first solo project in 1968, a album titled Brian Wilson. The album was followed by Friends (1968), 20/20 (1969), and Smiley Smile (1967). In subsequent decades, Wilson continued to struggle with mental health issues while sporadically working on new music projects. In 1988 he co-foundedwith lyrical collaborator Van Dyke Parks the avant-garde band Smile; though its members included Wilson’s Beach Boys bandmate Denny Johnston on drums – none of them were Beach Boys, and recording for their debut album stopped after two unfinished tracks were bootlegged in 1991. That same year Wilson’s longtime collaborator Mike Love sued him over royalties from their joint compositions; the case was settled out of court in 1993.
