In 1988 he co-foundedwith lyrical collaborator Van Dyke Parks the avant-garde band Smile; though its members included Wilson’s Beach Boys bandmate Denny Johnston on drums – none of them were Beach Boys, and recording for their debut album stopped after two unfinished tracks were bootlegged in 1991. That same year Wilson’s longtime collaborator Mike Love sued him over royalties from their joint compositions; the case was settled out of court in 1993.
