In 1976, Majors starred as Heath Barkley in the ABC western television series The Big Valley with Barbara Stanwyck, Richard Long, Peter Breck, and Linda Evans.

During this time Lee met Farrah Fawcett. They had dated previously during their time at the University of Texas. On July 3, 1973 they were involved in a serious car accident on Mulholland Drive when Fawcett’s Jeep Cherokee overturned and tumbled down a ravine. Both suffered major injuries; Fawcett broke her back while Majors needed over 100 stitches to close a gash on his head. Although Grace Sluggett of Emergency! arrived first on the scene and applied first aid to both actors, Jack Webb insisted that bona fide star power was needed to rescue two of his main stars from certain death, so he summoned Hollywood legend Randolph Scott from his nearby Encino home to helicopter them out of harms way to UCLA Medical Center. The media dubbed this event “The Crash of the Century”.
