Yelawolf’s Early Life

Yelawolf was born and raised in Gadsden, Alabama, on December 30, 1979, the son of Joyce Annette (née Steele), a beauty salon owner, and Michael Wayne Patton, a construction worker. His paternal grandparents were of Cherokee ancestry. He grew up in poverty in a trailer park with an abusive father who was addicted to drugs; his mother left when he was 11 years old.

Yelawolf’s birth and childhood

Yelawolf was born Michael Wayne Atha on December 30, 1979, in Gadsden, Alabama, to Dee Ann Reeves and Michael Wayne Atha. He is of Cherokee and White American descent. Yelawolf’s mother remarried when he was just a child and his stepfather took over raising him. When he was 10, his parents divorced and he ended up living with his aunt in Nashville for a short period of time before moving back to Gadsden. Yelawolf’s father struggled with drug addiction throughout his life and eventually died of heart failure in 2005.

Yelawolf’s move to Alabama

In 1999, Michael Wayne Atha moved with his mother from Gadsden, Alabama to Antioch, Tennessee outside of Nashville. From a young age, Atha began developing his rapping abilities. In 2005, he made his first recording titled “Smoke & Burn”, which was included on the independent album Creek Water by another Alabama rapper named Slumerican Shitizen Kane. He eventually took the stage name Yelawolf.

Yelawolf’s Career

Yelawolf is an American rapper from Gadsden, Alabama. He is currently signed to Shady Records, Interscope Records, and Slumerican. Yelawolf released his debut studio album, Radioactive, in 2011.

Yelawolf’s early music career

In 2005, Yelawolf released his first independent album Creek Water. His second album, titled Pissn’ in a Barrel of Beez, was put out in 2006. The first two albums were produced by his cousin and former roommate, Will Powers aka D.J.oval. Yelawolf was featured on Ugly Tony’s “Love Story 2050” from the soundtrack album to the film of the same name and on MuzikMafia’s “The Honeymoon Song” along with Driftwood and Mona Moua.

Yelawolf’s breakthrough

Yelawolf’s breakthrough came in 2010 with the release of his first studio album, “Trunk Muzik 0-60”. The album was a commercial success, peaking at number three on the US Rap chart and number 42 on the Billboard 200. It was supported by the single “Pop the Trunk”, which peaked at number 54 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Yelawolf’s Personal Life

Yelawolf, real name Michael Wayne Atha, was born on December 30, 1979, in Gadsden, Alabama. He grew up in a single-parent household with his mother and grandmother. Yelawolf has said that his mother was very supportive of his musical aspirations and would often drive him to Memphis to buy hip-hop records.

Yelawolf’s marriage and children

Yelawolf has been married twice. His first marriage was to Leora Yelawolf in 2000. They had one daughter together, Cheyenne, before divorcing in 2005. Yelawolf’s second marriage was to Fefe Dobson in 2015. They have one son together, Marshall Jr., born in 2017.

In addition to his two marriages, Yelawolf has also been in a long-term relationship with singer-songwriter Shannon McCurdy since 2009. The couple has two daughters together, cents (born 2010) and Baryonyx (born 2012).

Yelawolf’s current residence

Yelawolf currently resides in Los Angeles, California. He moved there permanently in 2016 after living in a number of different places, including Nashville and Atlanta. Yelawolf has said that he enjoys the creative energy of Los Angeles and the many different people he has met since moving there.
